After the majority of the Portuguese Football Fan collective shouted out loud that they wanted everyone’s favorite gypsy to get a chance, LouPhilSco finally let him off the bench and onto the pitch. He had a nervy bit of footwork on the ball at the beginning, but fellow Sporting product (who isn’t a Sporting product at this point, really?) Cristiano Ronaldo showed his unselfish side and decided to present Ricky Q with his first goal of the tournament. Given Simmy Simmy Ya’s mediocre performances thus far, hopefully he’ll get a good deal of playing time going forward. He can at least probably count on a nice chunk of playing time in Sunday’s meaningless encounter with the Swiss. Therefore, Quareszilla should be looking to use that stage to prove that he deserves more than just a novel fifteen minutes at the end of a given match.

On a completely unrelated note, the Hallmark Corporation has decided that this Sunday is to be known as “Father’s Day.” My dysfunctional family has chosen to have a large get together for my father, grandfather and a few of my uncles. Why am I telling you this? Well, I’m saving my preview of the meaningless match for tomorrow. I would have liked to have given you a recap of the match right after it takes place but seeing as I have the aforementioned shin dig with my family, I won’t be able to recap the jogo until Monday. The boys are facing off in their final Euro2008 tune up against Georgia (the country, not the American state) tomorrow in the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, which is home to newly relegated Portuguese side União de Leiria. The match is supposed to be broadcast live on RTPi at 18:00 Lisbon time. It’s going to also be repeated on Setanta Sports later on in the day.

I’m looking for at least a 4-0 ass whooping here. The losses to Italy and Greece (while essentially try outs and filled with injuries) may still be lingering somewhat. A good thrashing and comprehensive victory will go a long way to making the ride into the Alps a lot more enjoyable. That, and I hear Ronaldo and Nani are providing the “entertainment” for the trip. Força Portugal!

I know Rui Costa took a bit of a hit with this week’s WAG Wednesday, but I’m sure he’s over it by now. Since he’s playing in his final match of professional football this Sunday at home against Vitória Setúbal, I thought it would be nice to take this Foto Filler Friday and turn it into a pictorial tribute to THE “Number Ten” of our Golden Generation, Rui Manuel César Costa.
