am i the only one who thinks figo should be suspended?! what he did in that game was totally unprofessional, rude, violent and stupid and it should have earned him a red card.

i am not portuguese but i am quite a fan of the team and i love the way they play. but figo is bringing it down with his big football player airs. just like he did in the previous portugal – england game, when scolari was smart enough to take him out.

@ ilya

You forget about the Dutch players? What about the guy who took Ronaldo down? Was that not unprofessional, rude, violent and stupid and it should have earned him a red card?

Ilya,
Let it go. He was dealt with already! Get over it.
Alot of red/yellow were given or not given during the game and if you were to anylize all, we could probably change a few!

What about the dive in yesterday’s game? Are they going to take the win away from Italy? No! He deserved a red card for diving as well!

If you are going to complain about bad calls or bad sportsmanship be fare and talk about all of the games. Or are you only prejudice against Team Portugal…

i told you i am a fan of portugal. i admire their speed and the way they can do everything so well, while keeping the speed.

i may be prejudiced but not against portugal. i am prejudiced against figo. he simply does not fit. he’s too slow for the likes of cristiano ronaldo (who is one of the best players of the time imo) and deco (who is even better). i remember the match between portugal and england at euro 2002 where figo only stood in the way. and then when scolari *dared* to take him out he threw an ugly look to the camera and then i remember reading that he didn’t join the celebrations the team had for winning the game.

i am prejudiced against figo not only because he’s old and slow but because he still thinks he’s worth the millions real madrid paid for him which he’s not. and that’s why he did what he did in the holland game. and that kind of thing will only prejudice the portuguese team in the end. because of stuff like that they might play in 10 in a crucial game, if some referee will, of course, dare, to kick figo out.

the dutch were indeed violent. the ones who started the fight deserved to get kicked out. the guy who faulted ronaldo deserved to get a red straight up (and not wait for the second yellow).

i have not mentioned anywhere in the upper post of the innocence of the dutch because i don’t believe in it and that was not what the post was about. the post was about how figo might prejudice portugal’s chances of winning the england game and how i believe that portugal as a team would be better off without him. for the above reasons.

ilya,
I have to say that at times during the Euro2004 I did question Figo’s ability to lead Portugal…having said that…did you watch Portugal’s previous matches…he has been impeccable, key player, when he took over Deco’s position, he was voted man of the match! I think Figo still has alot of fire in his legs!

I do not agree with you…but I believe that everyone has a right to their opinion…

Guess, we’re not the only ones who think the Dutch were dirtier (even though Portugal weren’t angels at all). Look:

“Ivanov said he was taken by surprise by the rough tactics of Dutch players.

‘You would expect some dirty tricks from the Portuguese. They are known for time-wasting or hitting from behind,’ he said. ‘But I was unpleasantly surprised by seeing such things from the Dutch. More so, they were the instigators.’”

I;n si glad that stupid Referee won’t be in any other games right after this world cup. he should just stand outside with a bunch of his cards since he does such a great job showing them off.

REPLY: Bruna
okay first of all…DUH-UH of course we will never play as good as FIGO caz we ain’t SOCCER PROFESSIONALS!!!!!!!!

And to all you portugeese people who wrote stupid stuff —YOU are the ones who need to get a life attacking HOLLAND with your useless comments.
if it won’t make a difference by attacking one’s team with criticism then stop talking stupidness. Everyone knows that the portugeese players were the ones at fault. At the start of the FIFA tournament, I was actually cheering for portugal (for the fifa cup) and iran. But now I changed my mind caz SOME of the portugeese players turned out to be mental weirdos like FIGO. And what was that all about when a hollander ACCIDENTALLY hit FIGO in the face?!?!?! all the portugeese substitutes started jumpin him–ONE GUY!!!. They are all obnoxious weirdos…with the exception of DECO, PETIT, PAULETA, and somewhat christiano ronaldo (although he seems to be more head-strong than feet-strong)…..SO that sums up that the Portugeese are sore winners. It’s better to lose a good game than to win a bad one so GOOD JOB HOLLAND. By the way…statistics showed that holland were by far the more stronger and better team. THIS IS NO OFFENSE. FIFA STATISTICS.

PS—FIGO SHOULD HAVE BEEN PENALIZED. THAT WAS THE STUPIDEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN FROM A FOOTBALL PLAYER. SO HEY IF ANYONE THINKS FIGO IS SO GOOD…IF YOU THINK HE’S SO GOOD WELL GUESS WHAT?!?!?! PULL YOUR LIP OVER YOUR HEAD AND SWALLOW!!!

Hi figo..see you everywhere on these posts!
I’m not gay (3 kids) but am i the only one to notice the homophobic insults by portuguese fans? disgraceful. In this day and age can’t they find funnier more intelligent insults? It’s so 50’s and pointless, gays form 11% of the world and contribute enormously. Get a life, port fans..grow up and stop throwing you toys out of the pram!

He will be looking for a new club after yesterday. I don’t think the United dressing room will be a pleasant place for him. Disgraceful – you call this sportsmanship?

Dear Cristiano Ronaldo,

If you won a medal after taking steroids, you would know that your medal was worthless. Why then do you think you have really won anything by your sneaky cheating?

The World Cup is supposed to be a test of the greatest footballers, not the greatest cheats. Everyone around the world has seen what a shameful person you are. I feel sorry for you. I also feel sorry for the Portuguese football fans. Maybe you could have gone on to win the World Cup fairly, like men. Now you will never know.

This is not a diatribe against Portugal or the Portuguese team but a serious reality check.

The Portuguese were out to get Rooney sent off and achieved it. Portugla have played dirty and cheated in every single game of the 2006 World Cup because they can only succeed by being unsportsman-like and cheating.

There is no doubt that Scolari is a great manager but the team is very very average. So what do you do? You cheat.

If you had not cheated in the England game, you would have lost to England. It’s very telling that it took penalties (and a sympathetic referee) for you to beat England despite the fact England were down to 10 men and missing their best players.

You guys will get what you deserve. I hope France whip you 5-0. Don’t pretend you don’t deserve it. That’s what happens to dirty cheats.

And I have not even started on Ronaldo. I really really hope his Real Madrid falls through and he stays at Man U and spends the next season in the Premiership……….

You cheat if your team mate suffers an agression and you say to the referee “what is this sh!t”, but you don’t cheat cause of the agression (it’s in the football rules that if the agrssion is commited by an english player you can only give him a kiss.

You are playing for the quarter final and the other team is with less 1 player and you wink (cool the other team is only with ten it can be a little easier now (that wasn’t the case cause it was more difficult that way)).

Some of you say that he is a crying baby cause final of euro 2004 and when the dutch player made the other agression (but we are always cheating) but when it cames for Beckam it was a hero crying sufering.

Where have you seen in the whole tournment Ronaldo cheating?

I just don’t understand how the people atack the portuguese players and after defend players (that I like too) like Henry (diving) and Zidane (red cards and agressions in WC games).

It’s sad to listen less than 24 hours from the game a player like Gallas in the press conference saying all that sh!t about portuguese players knowing what the team mates do when teir are in the pitch.

We are a small country and the image that we have of this WC is that England and France are affraid of us and just make great pression upon the referees before the games.

I would just love to see C. Ronaldo or Deco or Figo scoring a goal and then all the team run to a side of the pitch and dive (all the players). You know, I loved to see when Fowler after a goal that he scored put in his knees and snifed the white line of the pitch cause were saying that he consume cocaine.

Portugal 15 – 0 France

I’ve had some time to reflect on England getting knocked out and it’s nothing to do with Rooney getting sent off or the referee. We played poorly throughout the tournament and are hopeless at penalties. That said with 10 men we should have beaten Portugal who are equally poor. The thing that disaapointed me most from Portugal is the sprit in which they played the game which is why I now want either France or Italy to win the world cup. The threatrics from the Portugese players was pathetic. Maniche clinching his face when shoulder barged! Figo falling down evertime he is tackled! Ronaldo – shamefull. I’m glad Scolari is not going to be England manager, these tactics would not be accepted in England and actually makes Portugal players a laughing stock around the world. England were poor but played with spirit Portugal are poor and consider cheating the opponent and the game as OK – you should be ashamed…

Football needs a France v Italy final….

Hold on. No one is afraid of playing Portugal. What annoys other teams is that to get ahead you guys cheat, do theatrics, go out and out to get players sent off and behave really aggressively on the pitch.

The behaviour by a number of your players in this tournament has been disgusting. It does not help that the refs have allowed you to get away with it.

You say teams have behaved consistently as bad. Who? Sure Argentina had a brawl but for out and out dirty play during every game, no other teams comes near you.

You guys are getting a very bad reputation for being a second rate team who cheat their way to get ahead.

Maybe we should all do the same. So much for the Beautiful Game.

Edu and Jake, don’t be sore losers. At least England has won the Cup once, in 1966, after beating Portugal in the semis. Do you think Portugal still harps on that 40 year old loss? They have never won it and they have moved on. If they are the great cheaters you keep saying that they are, then something is wrong with FIFA for letting them get away with it for 12 straight games. Something is off in your “cheating” argument. Football played in England is different from that played in Portugal or Italy or Brazil. Cultures are different. Just like English is spoken differently in the US, the UK, or the Philippines, football is played differently in different cultures. Thus, “cheating” in football is arbitrary. Latin teams, just like their people, are more expressive, more passionate, they do not hide emotions, it all comes out, albeit sometimes exagerratedly so. So, in a nutshell, England was good, but not good enough. Stop crying over spilt milk and move on. I do not expect you to want Portugal to move forward to the finals, but at least swallow the bitter pill already. It seems you cant get rid of the bitter taste and so you choose to spit it out on the Portuguese team. Stop trying to impose your interpretations of right and wrong, bad and good, on a style you simply do not understand, or refuse to understand. Get over it.

Cricket have replays. Refs are ‘wired’ and could get a second opinion in less time than it takes to issue a yellow card. A few RED cards for cheating would stop it. Also, anyone injured is CARRIED off the field for treatment and has to be off for 5 mins.
