Argentina or Holland?

June 19th, 2006 | By: Luis Paulo | 46 Comments »

After 40 years he achieved the round of 16 at the World Cup. Now we only need to wait to see if we will face Argentina or Holland. What do you prefer?

Argentina scares me most. They are filled with talent with a well balanced team, strong on the defense and even stronger offensively. Besides that, they can leave Aimar, Tevez and Messi on the bench waiting for the opportunity to shine.

Holland has a young team, which play in a very similar way to Portugal, with Robben and Van Persie as wingers. They are fast and strong at the same time but I believe that Portugal might get some advantage on their inexperience, at least compared with the Argentinean team.

What do you think? Which team do you prefer to face? Should Portugal choose its opponent once they play knowing the Group C’s results?

If Argentina plays Portugal in the second round it would be the game of two teams with a good chance of winning the cup. That should make for a great game! As far as Italy vs Brasil that would be two teams that have underachieved in the first round but have tradition. Brasil is not going to win this world cup. their players dont move off the ball enough so there are not a lot of openings. To many chiefs not enough indians.

Ok Fabio, maybe a Trent did, I thought it was in reply to my post.

Who can guess which game will be most tantalizing, the surprise of which games are good is another reason why football is soooo goooood.

I thenk that Portugal teem have bedder chanse agenst Nederlands becus Portugal beet Nederlands in Euro 2004 and Nederland team was bedder in Euro becus thay had Seedorf and Davids, now thay have nobuddy who can play like Seedorf in midfeeld and stop gols from been score. Rude Van Nistilroy is OK, butt Robben is amazeng. I thenk that Portugal team have bedder chance to stop teem wifh one all-star in Robben, than a teem Argentina who have all-star like Tevez, Messi and Aimar on sideline seats. I thenk Argentena have better sideline teem then teem on start field. Butt i thenk that Portugal can pley guud agenst both teems and beet dem boat.

I thenk Ronaldo shood be sideline and deco be sideline and nuno Valente be sideline, and everone wit yello card be sideline. Portugal start Tiago, Paulo Ferreira, Boa Morte, Simao, and praps Ricardo Costa so Pinto Da Costa be happee. But i theenk dhat Portugal kan beet Mexico with sideline team ane wey. Angola weel ween 4-0 vs Irao and move on in tournament face Argentena. The End.

OGCDF, um num para rir

I still play Carvalho and Meira together. The 2 central defenders and goalie need to play as much together as possible to know how to work with eachother as best as possible. Neither have cards so they play regardless of the risk of injury.

yes, Italian

angola beat Iran 4-0! No way. Angola has yet to score a goal, what makes you think they will put up 4 on Iran.

Besides I think Mexico is a tougher opponent than you think. I doubt the subs can beat Mexico.

Lets be real agian guys! This is uncharted teritory for Portugal.

Are you crazy ??? Of course Portugal would like to play Holland. There is no way thet want to face this Argentine team. Unlike some ppl say, portugal can take on Argentine, if they play against each other, Argentine will tear up the portugese defense into peices. Once they score the first goal, the goals will roll on, they are moving machines.
I like hat guy who said Mexico will beat Argentine, I bet you still thinking about couple of instances of success in the past, dude wake up, this is a difeent team, and notice, I said team, when they are playing like a team, they will rip the mexican net like there is no tomorrow. If I were either team of you, I would not wanna face us. Thats why in our game vs Holland, we don’t care who wins, cuz we can beat either of mexico or portugal.

If Portugal plays Holland, I hope Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo stay away from each other…I can seee a potential yellow card coming out…

Especially since the comment that Ruud said to Ronaldo about going to “talk to his daddy.” That’s messed up, the kid’s dad died not too long ago.

Anyway, let’s hope they stay away…

Scolari just announced that we will have NO yellow carded players play, “even if Mexico is winning 30-0″. So no Ronaldo, Deco, Pauleta, Costinha and Valente. Everybody say it with me…NUNO GOMES! and hopefully Boa Morte.

if tht is the case then id have, ferriera at left back maybe?? simao on the right, boa morte left, and maybe petit in centre midfield, figo in the deco role behind gomes who id start with. Looking at tht it just shows what great depth in the squad we have which also shows what great potential we have on the bench like say argentina and spain.

Definitely Boa Morte working the wings in the renaldo role, Figo playing in the Deco role, one half only please. Petit centre and Sabrosa on the other wing, hopefully his head is on straight and he is not running around the pitch like a wind up monkey.

Just a quick question. How long will it take the Portugese fans to change into thier Brazilian jerseys, after Portugal is defeated by Argentina or Holland? Like Brazil gives a f–k about Portugal.

Portugal will surprise the cynics who underestimate them! Mexico is all talk and are very overated! Conclusion- Portugal will embarrass Mexico and will fight their way through to the quarter finals!

I’d rather prefer Holland over Argentina, just because we’ve faced them before on numerous occasions and we have a good record against them (won 5, drew 3, and lost 1). Argentina at the moment look very good, and I’d hate for Portugal to go home very early without getting into their real tempo. If we manage to beat Holland, this is how I predict our path will look like:

Round of 16:
Germany-Sweden
Argentina-Mexico
Italy-Australia
Switzerland-Ukraine
England-Ecuador
Portugal-Holland
Brazil-Czech
Spain-France

Quaterfinals:
Germany-Argentina
Italy-Ukraine
England-Portugal
Brazil-Spain

Semifinals:
Argentina-Italy
Portugal-Brazil

Thrid playoff:
Italy-Brazil

Final:
Argentina-Portugal

A final against Argentina would be a better stage to face them.

KG, wow you’re a douchebag! You represent Mexican fans very poorly. I guess there is always a rotten apple in the bunch.

Portugal already made it to the 2nd round, and cannot control who they play, so it is understandable why there isn’t a great deal of focus on an internet blog, we all just wish for a good game and no injuries or reds.

Don’t worry our substitutes will play very hard to try to earn 1st team action. You may end up wishing Portugal had tried less by the end of the day tommorrow!

Forte,

The fact that many Portuguese also support Brazil is not like wagon jumping as you allude to. Brazil and Portugal share a common language and history. Many Portuguese people have family in Brazil. I myself have 2 uncles there and am proud to give my support to Brazil, should Portugal not win.

After your team is eliminated do you stop watching the world cup? No, you pick another team and cheer for them.

Answering the question about why the Group D will play before C. It’s because of the TV. Many games were chanced after that. Australia-Japan(Group F) played before the Group E on 1st round.

Look.. I’m a Mexico fan, always have been and always will be, but I’m a realist as well. So far, all of you who say Mexico is overrated, I must concede that yes, so far their play only proves that they are overrated. That is the realist in me speaking.

Meanwhile, the Mexican in me is saying, just because they have not played well so far doesnt mean they dont have the potential to do so. They havent played to that potential yet and El Tri has proven that they can play with any team.

The Realist in me is about to speak again: Portugal isn’t special. They have the same exact issue that Mexico has and that is that they havent shown their potential either. They havent exactly demonstrated anything that should make Mexico, or anybody else for that matter, shake with fear in their shoes. However, Potugal that potential to go far in the tournament.
Everyone can agree that England has it and so do the Italians. Both have shown less. Even Brazil hasnt proven to have that killer instinct (yet); I think Todd Utah said, “To many chiefs and not enough indians.”

So far, if you’re a gambler, your money should be on teams like Argentina, Germany, and Spain. These two teams are demonstrating what it takes to be champions. It’s realistic.

Everyone that is a Portugal fan talks about the Euro championship and every Mexican talks about the Confederations Cup. Who freakin cares in my opinion, both are in the past, and everyone neglects to mention that neither team won either particular event. This is the World Cup, kiddies, a whole new event where great teams flop and unknown teams come up.

Wouldnt it be ironic that both teams from Group D fall to the teams from Group C anyway? All this B.S. about who gets who or who wants to draw what team in the next round will be for nothing.

HD..calm down, you’ll bust an artery. Thinking about all the permuatations in the tables is half the fun of the tournament. What you say is true – anything can happen and both teams have ‘the potential’ to do great things, while we all know they could go out early too. We’re just thinking ahead as I’m sure Scolari and La Volpe are too.
