[...] I came across this interesting article today about the number of Brazilian-born players who will be suiting up for other countries this summer at the World Cup. With competition for the selecion so intense, an increasing number of Brazilian players are seeking international opportunities elsewhere. The result is players like Deco for Portugal, Dos Santos for Tunisia and Dud for Croatia will all be playing key roles for their adopted countries this summer. [...]

By the way Luis, very nice posts. Wanna do one about João Moutinho? :-) He's likelly not to go at all cos we already have too many midfielders (and in that case he goes with the U21). He has already played with the AA team, though, and I for one really liked him.

He's 19, he has the most number of games from all the Sporting team - the youngest but the most mature and this is NO JOKE - he's (for me) arguably the best portuguese player in our league currently, and I'm sure the world will hear from him. SOON!!!

I got your idea, Luis. I didn't say I didn't agree. That's also what I meant when I refered the press and instability and etc. Casa onde não há pão, todos ralham e ninguém tem razão, right? This means, when everybody's starving, everybody complains but nobody is right. They NEED it so badly, it almost hurts...

I also think a champion candidate would only take the foot of the gas after being 2 up. BUT... I still say, be carefulll, cos the guys are good.

What I'm saying is they are not used to win. I can't recall any title for England since 66. They get the pressure but the squad(including the coah) don't get the idea. If they did they wouldn't be fighting over nothing. They would get together to solve their problem. Get united because they need the victory. In the last WC you can see Beckham(he jumps) not fighting for the ball in the beggining of the Brazilian first goal. Against Portugal, after they lost Rooney they stop playing. They just defend. That's not a behave of a team there need that bad the title. It's hard to explain with so little words but that's the idea.

It's not surprising that Scolari made Portugal think like winners and behave like winners. He is a winner himself and a master motivator. Portugal's team in World Cup 2006 should be way better than 2002. Their previous coach was horrible. Scolari has a lot of experience in playoff competitions. He's taken many teams to finals and titles even when they weren't the best technically and the fans doubted them. I say watch out for Portugal!

To come back to the ENG issue you've just pointed out, Luis, to be honest I haven't seen much of them recently. One is clear for me: they are top class, they've been having more pressure to deliver than Mercury himself and all the fuss and instability with the coach can do them no good.

I also think he brought more than attitude. He brought that rigourous mentality, that prevented POR from loosing points "for free". The attention for the "little" things, that usually make the difference at a higher level: cutting down the mistakes, keeping the spirit high for 90 mins (GER is the best example on this one), scoring from free kicks, etc...

He also made the portuguese people wrap the team with a cloth of tenderness and inconditional support - I mean, during EC04 there wasn't a house in Lisbon without a national flag, showing the peoples support, no matter the outcome.

I believe that act like a winner is one of the most important atitude for a team. It's to me, England biggest issue. They have the players but not the atitude. I didn't like Scolari when he coached Brazil but I believe that he is has a major part on the portuguese success.
