FIFA Rankings – PT down 1 to 8th

July 14th, 2006 | By: Luis | 11 Comments »

The new rankings are out and, once again, we’re left wondering how it all works. You can review the new rankings on the FIFA site here. If you’re in the mood for mind puzzles and want to have a go at deciphering the points system, read the official FIFA points guide in PDF format. For a more general comparison between the old points system and the new, take a look here.

If you have the patience to calculate the points for Portugal in both systems, please share with us the most likely cause for the drop to 8th place despite finishing 4th in the competition. I’m not even sure a detailed analysis is possible given the fact that FIFA doesn’t bother to explain what “complex calculations” actually means on more then one comparison point.

Argentina getting kicked out by Germany in Germany, doesn’t mean anything.

Germany should be 7th because their team seriously isn’t that strong.

Portugal is 5th because it showed the world they are amongst the top 5 teams.

Brazil sucks Donkey balls

I put France in 2nd to give hope to all African nations.

There you have a much more accurate ranking and I needed no calculations

I have just heard that Ronaldo has refused to play for that English Club, and I would like to know if this is true and what his chances are of being released, as I have also heard that the Club is not prepared to sell him as yet.

I detest the term “sell him”, he is not a commodity to be bartered willy nilly!! This practice should be abolished as it intimates at more sinister doings. If Ronaldo wants to quit playing for that team I think he has ample grounds, based solely on the hatred and threats made by the English public.

I do not understand the hatred that these English people have!!? Ronaldo, quit and tell them to stick their club! Go home, you are adored there and no-one will hurt you.

As for Fifa coming up with a ranking of 8th place. It makes no sense and I think that what ever system they have for calculating their rankings is designed in such a way as to so totally confuse us, so we don’t see through as to who is really running FIFA. I know what I think!

I WANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW ENGLAND COULD BE RANKED ABOVE US????????

I don’t know how we are behind NEtherlands and England.

We stopped netherlands from qualifying to 2002, we knocked them out in 2004, and knocked them out in 2006.

And I don;t remember when the last time England beat us and also we knocked them out of the last 2 tournaments.(2002 & 2006)

I disagree with these so called ranking systems. As for Ronaldo, the English fans just don’t like him because of the incident where they think he asked for a red card to be handed out to Rooney. That is not true, however, and is just the assumption by the media. In reality, I don’t believe these teams can be ranked systematically, since nothing is really black and white. If any variation had taken place, maybe a misplaced ball or unluck own goal on the part of Portugal, maybe they wouldn’t even have made it as far as they did. Likewise, it could very easily have worked the other way where Portugal might have finished on top overall. It comes down to subtleties, in my opinion. The important thing is that the team does its best and has trained for these games.

Rankings should start at the end of every WC and the world champions should be No.1 followed by the nations in order of finishing. Then this is updated during the next four years as each nation plays international matches. So, for instance, if Italy loses a few of their matches during the next four years they will lose the No.1 spot, and others who win will creep up the ladder, and so it will apply during the four years as the WC games are played. But the continue with Brazil as No.1 when they have achieved less than Italy during the past four years is a sign that the rankings cannot be taken seriously.

The ranking system should last only four years just like the winner of the WC is champion for only one one. Then all matches played beween nations including playoffs for entry to the WC finals are taken into consideration to determine the rankings.
