Iran post game wrap-up
Some post game interviews (all links in Portuguese):
Deco believes
Deco scored a magnificent goal in the 63′ to open his world cup account. In his post game interview he stressed that it’s very important for our fans to continue to support the team as we endeavor to make history. “The most important thing is that goals help us to win games, and above all, qualification for the second round, which was our priority. I think our people need to have faith in our team. We believe and we are doing our best to make our fans believe, too.”
He went on to say that Portugal is moving in the right direction and that we need not fear any team. He also stressed caution. “Other teams are playing at the same level and, as Angola has shown, no team should be taken lightly.”
We believe Deco and we hope Portugal has even better games ahead.
Scolari smiles, just a little bit
Scolari showed approval for today’s performance and subsequent qualification. Immediately following the end of today’s match, Scolari showed a very positive attitude about the team’s progress.
“It has been forty years since Portugal qualified for the second round of a world cup. We’re satisfied because we played well and won yet another important game.”
Regardless of qualification, Scolari shows a desire to keep the winning streak alive against Mexico. “It’s one more game to win. It (game vs. Mexico) will decide first place and set the tone for the second round.”
Asked which team he would rather face in the second round, Scolari seemed unconcerned. “We’re not trying to avoid any team. All teams in the second round will play equally challenging football.”
The interviewer went on to ask the million dollar question. How far can Portugal go in this tournament? To which Scolari replied with a subtle smile, “We’ll go as far as we can, as far as they let us go and as far as our capabilities allow. There are stronger teams then Portugal, with solutions for every situation. We have some weaknesses and we have to improvise, but at the moment we are in good shape and anything is possible.”
Força Scolari! With you at the helm, we can achieve great things.
F. Meira: mission accomplished
F. Meira was visibly satisfied with Portugal’s victory and, as still, clean sheet. “This victory tastes like mission accomplished, but from now on, we only think about Mexico. When we win, things always feel good, but when we lose or draw we can also learn from our mistakes. Now, we have to focus on our next game as we want to finish top of our group.”
F. Meira had a couple of questionable moments in the game with Iran, but you can be sure that Scolari will work on placement and long ball threats ahead of next Wednesday’s game.
Figo dedicates victory to suffering ‘tugas’
Figo put in another great performance and created both scoring opportunities. “We are all very happy to achieve qualification for the second round in our second game. It’s also a very happy moment for all our supporters that have suffered with us through the ups and downs”, he declared. “The game with Mexico will not be easy and we can’t afford to play for anything less then a victory. I packed an especially large bag for Germany because I hope to stay here until the final. We may not get there but that’s our objective and we believe we can achieve it”, he continued.
Right on Figo. What a great attitude. We all hope you have to do some laundry between now and July 9th. In fact, I’ll wash your sox by hand if need be.

We fight and struggle for sure, but we always respect our opponents. Portugal takes much abuse and gets very little respect. I will live and die for this team. The example they set is worthy of remembering.
I just think it’s funny how the world views Portugal. We never said we were the best team in the world. We never said we would win this championship. We never disrespected any opponent, yet everyone is out to get us.
They hack and slash. They call our greatest players wimps and divers. It seems that everyone in Europe is out to prove we are not the best. Is it fear? Is it envy? I don’t know what it is, but I’ve never seen a more humble 23. They are serious about their objectives without making outlandish claims. They wish only to bring their people happiness. Why does it seem so many wish us harm?
How is it that a a small nation of 10 million+ ( if you count the many scattered througout the world) can attract so much negativity? It seems that half the football world is out to get us. Yet the other half is secretly rooting for us.
Angola knows we fight for them. Heck even Iran knows we are a small minnow dreaming of sleeping with the big boys. Our people still speak of the echoes of famine. We have struggled indeed and we only ask for what all nations deserve – a fighting chance.
We will take each test as it comes. Our courage is unquestionable – our ability too, but that special something that leads to titles? Well, that’s a recipe to envy indeed. It’s as much timing as it is skill and endurance. It’s a bond that can’t be explained. Others have shown it. We hope for nothing else but to be able to show the world that we, too, can achieve great things.
We want to take nothing from the other 31 nations in Germany. We respect them all equally. We only hope to show what we have to contribute.
Força Portugal!

I like the way Portugal played, (Offensive and good control). I did not like Ronaldo, too much presentation, not a lot of content. Pass or shoot, don’t dance around the ball. What’s the point????
