Maniche signs for Atlético de Madrid, finally!

August 30th, 2006 | By: Luis | 9 Comments »

Maniche has finally signed for Atlético de Madrid and will be officially presented to club members and fans tomorrow. It’s been a long and bumpy ride for Portugal’s midfield canon. The former FC Porto player was traded, along with Costinha, to Dynamo Moscow back in 2005. The deal went sour early on and both athletes fell out of favor after they expressed some distaste for life in the Russian league. Both players have now come full circle and will be reunited in the “rojiblanco” midfield.

Maniche managed to work out a loan spell with his old pal José Mourinho for part of last year but finding playing time on a star packed team like Chelsea isn’t easy. The World Cup seemed to be a turning point and his performance for Portugal helped to pave a path to this three year contract with Atlético de Madrid.

To celebrate Maniche’s signing, I thought we might revisit his tasty goal in Portugal’s 1 – nil victory over Holland in the round of 16. You can bet you’ll see more of the same in La Liga this season.

Força Portugal!

He’ll be team mate of another portuguese hope, in Atl Madrid: Ze Castro, also U21 (central defender, I think).

When I was in Portugal (about two weeks ago), Portuguese managers told us it was absolutely sure that Maniche would be playing for any English or Scottish team. Now we’re very surprised and happy to hear about his signing in Spain!
Anyway, is Nuno Gomes completely cured now?
He, Armando Petit and particularly Rui Costa were brilliant in the CL-qualification against Vienna, but Nuno seemed to be in pain and he wasn’t as fast as before.
