Matinee Monday: Dancing With the Portuguese

May 26th, 2008 | By: Greg | 11 Comments »

I couldn’t help but remember the Brazil v Portugal airport commercial from a few years back when I saw the ESPN Euro2008 promo featuring Portugal.

For me, the older commercial is more fun and brings out the playfulness and spirit of the team better than the new ESPN spot that features almost exclusively Figo and Crissy. Make your own conclusions…

The “Come Dance with the Portuguese” ad is waaaay better than the one they did for the italians…waaay better. I don’t know why they did that because they basically highlighted all of the criticisms Americans have for soccer in the Italians’ ad (whining, faking injuries, etc.). The Portuguese one is nice but I agree that the first video you posted is more of a fun video and more entertaining.

And one last thing… if this is the commentary we can expect here in the US I may have to mute the games (watch the whole thing if you can take it to get the full effect): http://youtube.com/watch?v=yBPi7wv_J6c&feature=related

I’m dying to know which Portugal commercial Tim likes more.

Personally I like the one with Brazil, but we can’t complain with the new, the Italy one is a marketing oddity indeed.

The old one is classic. New one is nothing compared to it.

I like both very much. I also like the detail of the portuguese (at least it sounds like it) in the second add.

I like the ad, but the music has to go…Where is Jorge Ferreira when you need him!!! It would have also been nice to see a few other people like Nani or Simao.
