He was pushed in the back. A two-handed push. That's not something you can defend against. Ballack got away with an obivous push. What if someone else was defending Ballack? The push would have been neutralized? Portugal has a long way to go before it can be a "big" side. The Euro 2008 qualifying showed that we have many weakenesses. We should never lose to Poland or allow Poland, Serbia and Finland to tie us on home soil. We need to be better for WC2010 qualifying because Denmark and Sweden are dangerous sides. I think Scolari was exactly what Portugal needed after their implosion in 2002. I think he helped the team and the nation foster a sense of purpose, confidence, and pride in their national football team. I do think that a change is good at this point, maybe a different coach with some new tactical ideas and fresh perspectives on the players can give the team what it needs to reach the next level. Obrigado Big Phil, and good luck in your new gig.

The leadership question is still a big one for Portugal: which player will step up and fulfill the role of team captain?

Can a new tactical formation overcome Portugal’s weakness up front? And for the love of God can the team learn how to deal with set pieces by 2010?
