Nuno Valente might miss the World Cup
According to the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Nuno Valente might not be able to play the World Cup in Germany this June.
The declaration came from his coach in Everton, David Moyes, who said that he is suffering from an injury in his thigh which obligates him to stop for over 6 weeks. For this same reason, Nuno Valente missed the last two Everton’s matches.
If this scenery gets confirmed, that would be the second big lost at Scolari’s defense squad. He recently lost his central defender Jorge Andrade after a injury during a La Coruña match.
This took me in a bit of surprise. I have only seen one portuguese newspaper talking about it.
I believe that the natural replacement would be Marco Caneira.
Any more injured players and Portugal will end up without good defenders available for the WC.

Well, if you remember in 94, Brazilians called for their defense Mozer, Ricardo Gomes, Ricardo Rocha and Aldair. After Mozer, Ricardo Gomes and Ricardo Rocha got injuried, they played with Aldair and Marcio Santos and they were the best defense during that WC. You can say that Aldair and Marcio were great defenders but until that World Cup, we brazilians, didn’t know that.
This one also took me by surprise. I’m in Lisbon for a couple of days and this one just flew by me…
These 2 PLUS the big question mark over Costinha are starting to make me loose sleep.
For the LB position we also have Caneira and Ribeiro (Maniche’s brother, did you know?). I’m not sure but I think he even played more often than Caneira. They are equally solid in the defensive role. So, defendind I’m not affraid. Nuno Valente is the more offensive LB we have. And I feel we really need sobedy to “climb the corridor” who’s good with the ball in his feet. Paulo Ferreira, however, has been Scolari’s 1st choice as replacement he’s also quite solid and sobre, plus he plays for Chelsea. He’s going anyway because he’s already the right back #2. Miguel (our RB) is also more offensive – he started as an attacking player, would you believe it…
And Luis has a very good good point. It will all depend on how it turns out to be.
This is of some concern, but we do have options. I think there is a chance he’ll recover in time.

[...] It seems a little miraculous to me, but Nuno Valente’s 6 weeks treatment will be done in … 1. He might be able to get back to his training in one week and is expected to be back on the field one week after that. [...]
