Our Selecção tells its own story

A Patria Fomos NosBarely a month after the World Cup, a new book is available from editor Primebooks titled A Pátria Fomos Nós! Loosely translated that’s “We Where the Nation”. The author, Afonso de Melo, was a media liaison for the national team up until the end of the competition, when his contract expired. In this book, he provides readers unique insight into the workings of the team and the events that gripped a nation for over a month. The book is written, more or less, as a journal, starting with Big Phil’s selection announcement and culminating with the team’s “Welcome Home” party in Jamor. It’s certainly not high literature, but if you’re dying to know what was going through Figo’s mind after the match with Holland or if Ronaldo really did have a master plan for Rooney (wink..wink), then you may want to shell out the cash and add this book to your Summer reading list. Just in case it isn’t clear, this book is written in Portuguese.

To order directly from the editor, go here. If you’re lucky enough to be in Portugal, you can also pick it up at many bookstores. Fans in the US or Canada can order via amazon.com but at more then double the price.

Neither the Portuguese federation, nor Scolari himself, were too pleased with this book´s release. And said it. Actually, the book is signed by Afonso de Melo, not by Afonso de Melo – FPF press assistent.

It must, therefore, be read as an individual vision of things. Not a formal position stand from anyone.

Personally I think he “put the finger” a bit too deep, here on there, against both foreign and domestic enemies. But I actually enjoyed it. :-)
