Portugal x Angola – Tactical Analyses

June 11th, 2006 | By: Luis Paulo | 5 Comments »

After four years waiting, Portugal will have today, its new chance to shine on the World Cup. The debut will be against its former colony Angola. Here follows what to expect from both team.

Portugal

DefenseDefending: Miguel and Nuno Valente aren’t to much secure. Therefore, Portugal needs that both Figo and Ronaldo to help the defense on the sides while Petit and Costinha guard the center of the field.

OffenseAttacking: Portugal plays with 3 offensive midfielders, but 2 of them are wingers: Figo and Ronaldo. They play by the wings, opening spaces to Pauleta receive crossed balls.

Angola

Loco, Jamba, Kali and Delgado forms and straight line on the back. André sometimes goes back to play like a sweeper behind the defense. This line formation makes them weak on deep balls on the wings what should be perfect for Portugal.

At the offense you won’t see too much creativity. They play a very simple game. Figueiredo is the playmaker while Akwa even being 39 years old will move through both sides of the field. Mantorras will not start but I don’t think I need to say to pay attention on him, right?

PORTUGAL
Ricardo; Miguel, Fernando Meira, Ricardo Carvalho e Nuno Valente; Costinha e Petit; Figo, Deco e Cristiano Ronaldo; Pauleta.
Coach: Luiz Felipe Scolari.

ANGOLA
João Ricardo; Loco, Jamba, Kali e Delgado; Zé Kalanga, André Makanga, Figueiredo, Edson e Mendonça; Akwá.
Coach: Oliveira Gonçalves.

Wooohooo! After a long wait, the day has finally arrived. As Luis Paulo says, we’ve been waiting for this day for four years to erase the memory of the terrible start in Korea/Japan. For me personally, I’ve been thinking about this World Cup since the Euro2004. We have high hopes for this team. Lets hope that with a lot of hard work and a little luck things will work out well for “a nossa selecção”

Força Portugal!

Deco’s not starting! According to the FIFA matchcast, Deco will not be starting the match. I’m wondering if this is the speculative line up or the real deal…

On June 8th just three days before Portugal have played their first game, a very keen supporter was killed in a tragic road accident in Madeira, Ronaldo’s birthplace. I would like to make a request to the Portugal team if they win this game (they are already 1-0 ahead as the game plays), can you dedicate your win (I know you will), to Bruno Caires, a dedicated football fan and keen supporter of the Portuguese team.

Thank you

Paul Watson
