Portuguese fans elect Ricardo Rocha to replace Jorge Andrade
According to a poll made by the Portuguese daily newspaper “Record” in their website, the Benfica’s defender Ricardo Rocha was chosen by the fans to replace Jorge Andrade on Portugal Team who won’t be able to play at the World Cup in Germany.
Curiously, Ricardo Rocha was only called by Portugal’s coach Luiz Felipe Scolari once.
In my opinion, his odds dropped considerably after he has lost his place in Benfica’s team to Anderson. Scolari often does not let himself be influenced by the Press. In the 2002 World Cup he left out the Brazilian striker Romário despites all the requests from Brazilian fans.

We need a substitute for both left and right back. Ferreira is the RB subst but also the LB subst. He can do both extremelly well. If Scolari takes Caneira, we have another LB, more defensive than Valente, but also one that can do central defender.
I woldn´t like this scenario, though… He is not so good as central defender. But it opens another spot, because if another pure CD goes (R Rocha or Tonel or any other) we have less options overall. PLUS, neither of them has played so many games in the heart of the defense with all the rest. And something Scolari has always worked on, was STABILITY. Always the same set up, good substitues (eager to play) and even more important, VERSATILITY. Deco played as a right back for some 10-20 minutes against England (EC04).
NOW we can say what we want. But nobody can predict what will happen when it counts… And when it gets tough, there’s no whining or silly excuses accepted anymore… There’s only PLAY AND DO YOUR (REAL) BEST.

Afer watching Benfica vs barcelona yesterday, I say Ricardo Rocha is going. He was Ronaldinho’s direct watch dog and as a result nobody actually saw Ronaldinho at all… Without a single foul.
