Quaresma called to National Team

February 23rd, 2006 | By: Dan Lourenço | 23 Comments »

Ricardo QuaresmaRicardo Quaresma (of F.C. Porto) has been called to the Portuguese National Team for a friendly against Saudi Arabia on March 1st. The 22 year old’s call-up comes at the expense of Fulham’s Luis Boa Morte.

Often compared to Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of pace and skill, Quaresma had been called regularly to Portugal’s Under 21 squad. “He has been playing reasonably well,” said Scolari said on Thursday. “His call-up offers me another chance to complete my final list of players.”

Portugal’s Squad for the Saudi Arabia match is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Ricardo Pereira (Sporting), Quim Silva (Benfica).

Defenders: Fernando Meira (Stuttgart), Jorge Andrade (Deportivo), Miguel Monteiro (Valencia), Marco Caneira (Valencia), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea), Nuno Valente (Everton).

Midfielders: Francisco Costinha (Dynamo Moscow), Armando Petit (Benfica), Tiago Mendes (Lyon), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Luis Figo (Inter Milan), Ricardo Quaresma (FC Porto), Deco (FC Barcelona), Maniche (Chelsea).

Strikers: Pedro Pauleta (Paris Saint-Germain), Helder Postiga (FC Porto).

For those of you who haven’t seen Quaresma play, here’s a link to a video of some of his best moments (including that amazing Porto goal, curled in the from the outside of his foot!) on YouTube.com:

I’ve always felt that Quaresma has the skills to be as good as Ronaldo. The only thing holding him back from the selecao has been his ball hogging. He could have used sometime under a coach like Fergi or Mourhino. They would have been able to tech him how to be a team player first.
He tries to beat every oponent he see’s instead of picking his spots when the right moment comes.
But I think that he is slowly learning this, which is why he’s been called up for todays friendly.
Hopefully he can show the coaching staff that he’s ready for the next level.
can you imagine a Portugal team with Ronaldo and Quaresma on the wings!!

Not only can I imagine it, I can also see it comming for the next WC (if we go). Quaresma, J Moutinho, Nani, and all the young guns being “prepared”, back home, as we speak… Figo won’t last forever (he’s 32), Simao is very good but we need more and Boa Morte is quite a good player, although not a gem like CR or Quaresma.

Quaresma was brilliant before CRonaldo, also in Sporting Lisbon. Then he moved to Barcelona and then to FCPorto. Simao Sabrosa also left Sporting for Barcelona (he was also quite young at the time) and then to Benfica, (so I guess Sporting Lisbon must stop selling young talents, because they all end up with the domestic enemies…). The problem is that he - Quaresma - was just too young. Adriaanse didn’t like him in the beggining of the season, saying that he’s not a team player. Now Quaresma is the refference with the FC Porto attack… But if the PORTUGAL vs Saudia Arabia was any good, was to show that Quaresma is still over anxious to “show”, rather than actually showing less and doing more - which can mean a defeat when playing against the big sharks.

It’s a pitty he still didn’t find his balance with the senior national team, because when he does, together with CR, it’s a dynamite killer duo…

On the other hand, Hugo Viana - the only one who might be the 2nd playmaker of the team, so the true substitue for Deco - did not impress with his superior skills BUT DID perform much much better and was involved on the last goal. Maybe he got himslef a seat on the Germany train with the team…

Quaresma tried and tried but could never produce a really dangerous move. The whole team, during the second half of that match, was actually a bit lost and did not excell. The arabs also improved a lot in the second half.

Cheers for their goalkeeper, much better than ours - sorry Ricardo but you had your glory momment in “that” match against ENG - Euro 2004… :-) Nobody (in Portugal) will forget it!!!

For those who are interested in finding out MORE about Quaresma, TOMORROW Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto will play in Porto, for the semi’s of the portuguese cup.

In the chapionship, Porto now leads 2 points ahead of Sporting and 7 ahead of Benfica. Porto currently plays with 3 defenders and 4-5 men attacking. Still they have one of Europe’s best defenses (something like 14 goals in 27 matches). They are both the best attack of the championship, with 43 goals scored each. Sporting also puts 5 men attacking, nowadays. :-)

These teams will also meet, IN LISBON, for the championship, in April… Nobody will want to take any prisioners tomorrow evening…

I’m glad you brought up Ricardo. He’s got to go! On corner kicks and set pieces he’s totally clueless. What was he doing on the winning goal at the Euro’s against Greece??? He looked like a 7 year old chasing a mouse… He scares the death out of me. We need to find a solid, smart goal tender.

To tell you the truth, I prefer Ricardo a million times than Baia. But I have my own reasons…

Ricardo has failed where a goal keeper cannot, when going for a tittle. But hey, Brasil didn’t always have the best goalkeeper (at all) and they still won the WC 5 times.

V Baia has also failed, maybe has failed even more, and people still considered him as a god… He was a god before going to Barcelona. After that, and although top level, he was never the same again. Give him a corner or a high ball, and the guy is nowhere…

In the Greek goal, I feel it was the whole team’s fault. But also his, of course. What was he doing looking at the ball, rather than running for it. It’s like they didn’t know what had happened to France or the Czechs… Just the faces of the players said it all, like “Oh, it’s just a corner”… Yeah… A corner against Greece is/was worse than an italian counter…

To finish, the truth is we don’t have anybody else to put there… But remember, don’t underestimate Ricardo… He was never that good, but he’s also not that bad. If Scolari says he’s good, than he’s good enough for me. FORCA!!!

Your right Pedro, who our we going to replace him with??
Maybe we can give a Portuguese citizenship to an Itallian keeper?
A 4th string itallian keeper is usually better than 90% of other nations keepers..

We’re just gonna have to suport Ricardo, and all the others, because they are all OUR TEAM! Anyway, still on the Ricardo issue, how do people expect him to gain confidence, if the whole country is always saying how bad he is? OK, he’s not the best there is, but he saved “that” penalty against ENG, he scored the clinical goal after, and this already makes him a hero…

An italian keeper… Yeah… I wouldn’t mind having Buffon, I agree with you on that… :-D

Soooooooo, what did everyone think about the game???????

Just earlier today we was saying that there should be more games like the POR ENG Euro2004 one. And here you go. BAM!! Porto wins. Now I have to listen to this Portista I know for the next week about how Porto is the best team in Portugal, How Baia should be on the WC squad how Scolari haetes any player from Porto…blah, blah, blah.

Oh, and by the way. I always though Croation goalies were bad. Man oh man, they seem like Italians next to that Ricardo.

Hi Soze. I didn’t see the macth. But I read and hurde about it… As iI said previously, Ricardo is not the best there is, but does he have to be? Is he any shame? Is he BAD? No, he isn’t…

Scolari is doing nothing more than what should have been made, long, long ago… And it’s not him who doesn’t like FC Porto, it is FC Porto who has been everything except friendly (to say the least), both with Scolari and with the national team. I rest my case…

I am indeed a SCP fan but that’s not the reason why I said what I said about FCP or Baia.

Anyway, how come a croatian knows so much about us??? :-)

Portugal is one of my favurite Countries. I go there every summer for one month on vacation…watch football, read the papers, talk with people. I guess you grow a liking for the local teams and players. If Croatia is not in a tournament, or if they get knocked out early (like in Euro2004)..I put on my Verde E Vermelho and off I go.

Also, here in Canada, there is many Portuguese. (God help us)lol. One of which is sponging off me…err, I mean married to me. Hi Honey.

Does anyone have a picture of Quaresma’s hair and sideburns (his sideburn lineup) from the most recent Portgual friendly in Germany?

The picture if of his sideburns and a bit above it and his lineup is like 2 lines shaved or soemthing like that.

Quaresma is the real deal we just have to see how his progress stands as far as the NT level.

At The under 21 level he has excelled and dominated and also is a hard worker.Yeah he is a ball hog and sometimes cocky but the Positives outway the Negatives. If scolari leaves him off the team we wont have a 2 string attacker who can cause trouble for any team.

Figo is unpredictable and Ronaldo I know will try to do to much for the team.

But the Cigano has a total upside and has alot to prove much like Ronaldo did at the Euros he has to show us why he is a player to watch out for.

Peace
Giuseppe
