Queiroz on Manchester United success
We all know about that “special” Portuguese manager in the EPL and his exploits, but there’s another great Portuguese manager plying his trade in the English Premiership that few would identify in a crowd. Fact is Carlos Queiroz has been at it a lot longer then the “special one”, albeit with less stunning results. Nonetheless, he’s a big part of why Manchester United are at the top of the table with 6 pts that seem more daunting with every passing weekend.
In this BBC Sport interview, Queiroz credits United’s recent success to a willingness to invest in youth development – Ronaldo and Rooney in particular.
“[It's] continuity, daily work, being patient with mistakes, being on the right track, believing that if we trust them and if we provide them with the right preparation that sooner or later they grow up and they start to perform,” said Queiroz.
That may sound like a no-brainer, but how often do managers have the courage to make such a commitment to unproven players so early in their careers. In today’s world of high pressure stakes, where millions are won or lost based on the the results of one game, it takes real clout to sell a longterm vision to executives that are primarily concerned with instant results and revenue growth.

I can only hope that Queiroz will be next in line when Felipao finally takes his leave from the NT

He has excellent man-management skills and is great at dealing with young players.

Pedro, I’m wondering if I may use the contents of the essay you wrote in “Nike and Puma bid for new Portugal sponsorship deal” for myself. I could use it perfectly well in a lecture about the aftermath of Portuguese History I have to give at a Spanish school. After all, it’s your literary property and I won’t use it without your explicit authorization.

Queiroz is very good and without him, simply there wouldn’t have been The Golden Generation… He stayed with PT and failed qualifying for WC94… Truth must be said, in the last matches it was very close between Italy, PT and SWI. The other two ended up going. Italy reached the final and Swi the quarters…
Anyway, Queiroz left with rather polemic comments on the FPF and how things worked… More than 10 years later, these statements were never clarified…
Just made a quick “digging” and found out he was involded with something called the “Q-report” and “Project 2010″. This was completelly new to me…

I still wonder what’s his real ability, in a(n) (adult) national team scenario…
Just found this…
Can’t help laughing…

@Carlos: Dude, by all means (feel kinda flattered)… It’s not even a particularly nice written text and I still feel like “what in the hell did I go and write all that in a footy blog”… But please re-check the data, if you’re gonna use it

It’s in their DNA, man…
Joke… I’d say it’s simply because conditions favour it…

Well…here is my most off topic and random post yet!! I was just watching the 2006 FIFA World Cup Film and noticed Henry talking to Ronaldo after the France v Portugal game and I was just wondering if anyone knows what was said. I know this is random but I am just curious for interest sake. Also congrats to Porto, Benfica, Braga and Man United for thier European successes (or half successes) this week! Hopefully Ronaldo didn’t do himself too much harm with the ole waterbottle kick!

Just a quick note to add that it still makes me smile and jump up and down to watch the replays of the penalty shoot-out between Portugal and England. It was just so sweet and the 2006 FIFA World Cup film gives a fairly good (if slightly pro-English) overview of the game.

That penalty shootout was not only extremelly exciting (and nice)
, it was also a record!

Have no clue about what Henry could possibly have said to CR…
SL Benfica, now to play PSG – which will oppose Simao and Pauleta; AND SC Braga has also reached the UEFA Cup last 16 and will play against Tottenham! Braga now under former PT international, (and FC Porto symbol), Jorge Costa, who got yesterday his first victory as a coach.

Luis, I’m in the process of watching Lille and ManU. I’m only about ten minutes into it — I figure I’ll work my way through it over the weekend.
But the one thing I have to say is: Oh. My. Gosh. The Pretty Ronaldo is SO setting off my gay-dar!! He completely has that good-looking gay guy strut.
(Sorry, you know it’s true.)

A pretty difficult task for Braga, but Benfica can beat PSG at least at home easily, and we all know that Simão is already a far better player than Pauleta.
BTW, you must have a look at some recent Ronaldinho photos, he’s grown nearly as fat as Ronaldo! Barcelona can be really happy about having Deco in their squad because without him, I couldn’t have stopped myself from laughing at their performance in the 2nd half!

Laurie – I never said he didn’t strut.
Don’t we all tune-in to watch him strut? About the gay thing, I usually tell my American friends, “He’s not gay, he’s just European!” For some reason, that explanation seems to satisfy them.
Carlos – no kidding. Ronaldinho better keep his shirt on until he’s back in shape. Can’t believe I’m in better shape then Ronaldinho. I don’t have his moves, but I don’t have his gut either.
Benfica can win the UEFA Cup if they stay in form.

Great quote from this article on Ronaldo and his most recent magic at Fulham.
“Before the kick-off, one heard a six-year-old boy gasp at the sight of Ronaldo. After that, grown men had shown him how to behave badly by constantly shouting “Cheat!” whenever Ronaldo went to ground, even when the foul tackles were crystal-clear. The second boy, the pensioner Ferguson, was left dancing at the end and nobody contradicted his joy.”

Luis, that explanation doesn’t satisfy ME.
He STILL sets off my gay-dar.
