Quinta-Feira Question Time: Gettin’ Outta The Group?

July 31st, 2008 | By: Greg | 6 Comments »

Right now, as it stands, Group A of the European World Cup Qualifiers for 2010 is as follows:

1) Portugal – 0 pts
2) Sweden – 0 pts
3) Denmark – 0 pts
4) Hungary – 0 pts
5) Albania – 0 pts
6) Malta – 0 pts

The bottom teams aside, this group is no cakewalk. We tried our hardest NOT to make the 2008 Euro by dropping points to awful ex-Eastern Bloc countries. Therefore, why should we be filled with confidence with this draw? In the end, first place is obviously an automatic berth with second place earning a home and away playoff, as long as the second place team is one of the “eight best” second place finishers.

I expect to qualify but I also expect the team to scare the shit out of me. Anyone NOT expect to make it? I know it’s hard to predict almost two years in advance what the team will be and the results, but it’s still a fair question at this point.

Well Greg,
Who should we lose to here, Sweden once in sweden, maybe a tie with Denmark away. I expect barring injuries which we always seem to have that we should still qualify. But our club always makes it interesting

Not sure about your lineup Michael…

I doubt Hilario will get a look unless he leaves Chelsea and gets solid first team football somewhere else. The formation could be right, if Queiroz sticks to a Man U type thing with our 3 wingers in a free role.

I hope he at least TRIES a 4-4-2 and introduces some new strikers into the mix. Perhapes Ricardo Vaz Te and Yannick Djalo while continuing to use Almeida & Postiga. Deco will probably be phased out, unless he starts to tear it up in the Premeirship but I dont really see that happening. I like the inclusion of M. Fernandes, but unless he gets over his injury problem who knows…

Any other thoughts on players? Hopefully Antunes can step it up over the next 2 years and get a look in the leftback position.

Oh, and does anyone have more information on Pele? It seems that he might actually stay with Inter this season instead of getting loaned out and play a role in Mourinho’s title campaign.
