Quinta-Feira Question Time: Realistic Expectations
While being a supporter of Portugal inherently comes with a certain amount of cynicism, we always hold out hope that the ultimate goal is a definitive possibility. However, with the obvious lack of a true potent striker and Ricardo’s recent shaky performances, the shiny armor is showing a bit of denting. Now ranked ninth in the world by FIFA and with the 2008 European Championships little more than a month away, I have to ask: Realistically speaking, given the group draw and other intangible factors, how do you think Portugal will fare in the upcoming tournament?
I honestly wish we would have had a slump buster type of team to play before we headed off to Austria-Switzerland. I mean, why couldn’t they line up a team like Luxembourg or Vatican City for us to pound on and give us a bit of confidence going into the tournament? Weren’t the most recent World Cup and EURO champs aiming just a BIT high before a tournament such as this? Either way, I say we exude some form of confidence, go for it all, and win the whole thing! Who’s with me!?
Guys?
Uh… hello?

I’m with you Greg.
Sometimes we place too much emphasis on games and qualification leading up to big tournaments. The boys are Portuguese! That alone means they’re never going to give it 100% till the big show (unless of course trying to impress the ladies).
So I say we are going to beat Germany on the way to the finals and then win in a all Iberian final!
Done! Come again in 4 years…

I think PT has enough to get to the Final. But I also think there are teams in a better position than us. Plus, we haven’t really been playing strong.
If we get out of groups I think it’s possible. We have the advantage we can only meet 1)FRA, 2)ITA or 3)GRE in the Final itself.
The crucial momment will be getting out of groups cos we face 2 attacking teams – which can work in our favour – but we also face the home team, in the last match. So things’d better be defined then. Our team is potentially strong but still a bit unbalanced and unstable (a lot of young players and less of a united base team unit) when compared to WC06. In short: “FORÇA PT – VAMOS GANHAR”

Friendlies/Qualifying performances before the actual tournament usually don’t mean much, as that won’t be the EXACT team playing at the tournament (although the pedigree is there). Brazil in 2002 finished 3rd in qualifying for the WC behind Argentina and Uruguay. They were horrible that year, and if it weren’t for Big Phil I doubt they would have even made it to the WC.
On the other hand, Portugal that year not only topped their qualifying group but they knocked out Holland, we won most of our friendlies and were in good form; plus we had the world player of the year. We were a force to be reckon with.
What happened? Well, Portugal lost in the most embarrassing way and was eliminated in the group stages of WC 2002. While lackluster Brazil proved critics wrong to lift their 5th world cup.
My point being, although it sucks to lose to Greece once more, if history repeats itself expected the unexpected from teams that are currently underperforming.
So for that reason, I believe my beloved country will finally bring us something to cheer for.
FORCA PORTUGAL!
