Quinta-Feira Question Time: Where Ya Watchin’?
Before I got a chance to post today’s discussion question, faithful commenter Nelson from nyc posted this on yesterday’s WAG:
Greg,
This weekend being “Portugal Weekend” and the only reason I really know that is because it always falls on the same weekend as “puerto rico” day. When I start seeing those puerto rican flags on the cars, I say to myself “Oh it must be Portuguese Weekend”. Long setup aside, Where is everyone going to watching the game Saturday? I will be at a bar watching the game with a Turk, who is a good friend of mine. He married my cousin, who is Portuguese and is barred from watching the game at home or wearing any of his Turkey gear until the game is over.
I read it and said “Shit, he’s tryin’ to steal Quinta-Feira Question Time’s thunder today!” So, rather than reprimand him and send him to his room, I decided to let him do the work for me today and ask the day’s question (in his convoluted manner of speaking).
Personally speaking, I watched the World Cup matches in 2006 at a bar on Ferry Street in the very Portuga Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey. However, since it IS “Portugal Day” weekend or whatever you want to call it and that means a massive amount of drunk morons packing the streets with no way in or out, I’m going to grab my brother, cousin, and a few friends and head over to a more local Portuguese watering hole where they have a few plasma screens and plenty of Sagres to suck down.
For the purpose of embarrassing my shirtless friend Mike and to give you an idea of the kind of mayhem that ensues after Portugal wins here in New Jersey, see the pictures I took outside the aforementioned bar back in 2006 after the penalty shootout win over the English:

this is off topic but i was extremely annoyed by ronaldo deciding that he was going to spring transfer rumors today eventhough days ago at the champions league final he was quoted that manchester was were he wanted to be…seriously he is the best player in the world but stop being so dramatic..he needs his own soap opera…i am from the states and besides a few pre madonnas great players stay with the team that made them great. C-ron has a chance to be the best united, maybe premier league winger (difference maker) ever…he is young and makes more money than most…please c ron show you are a team player more than an individual which what all your critics will state…you have a chance to be the best ever from portugal!!!!!!!!!!!

regrettably i don’t know anybody portuguese/interested in football here in IL so i’ll probably be watching it at home and wearing my deco jersey. i’ve been looking forward to this game for a looooooong time!

Looks just like St. Clair in Toronto, Canada after a Portugal game! YAY!!! I’m gonna wear my jersey today!! Yay!!!

Oh yeah, and I’m gonna watch it at home on our lovely HD tv and the rest of the fam!

I’ll be watching at home with my pops on our dying projection TV. My parents keep on waiting to get a new TV for some reason, but I love watching with my father so I’ll suck it up and deal with it. Also agree with Steve, what the hell is Ronaldo doing??? Stay at Man U, Real is garbage

Greg: WTF, Here I am, wasting company time by surfing the net and what do I see? You’re running this lemonade stand again? I thought that you “quit” us months ago. What happened? Did you have a “Brokeback Moment?”
It’s good to see your posts again…… they were missed. Thanks for the pics. I wish that I was out there for the matched. We have nothing closely resembling that type of participation out her in the Berkeley, CA Area.
Cheers!

Yes, Beto, I have returned. I’m back at the Offside as well. They begged.

I’ll be watching this game at my friend’s bar, Cafe Rio in Fall River, Massachusetts. Loads of Portuguese, Brazilian, and Angolans will be there! FORCA PORTUGAL!

I now live in Belize now and had the game on made all my co-workers watch and listen to it. LOVED the game I don’t think I have cheered so loud in a long time. Even called my dad who is in Canada at the club watching the game.
VIVA Portugal!!!

Around here (NYC area) nothing can beat watching the Portugal games in the Ironbound neighborhood in Newark. 400 screaming Portuguese fans setup in the Sport Club de Portugal, with the game projected onto a big screen in the front of the hall can’t be beat. And every time we win, just step outside and join the impromptu parade on Ferry Street.
Viva Portugal!

Out here in California we don’t have nearly the number of watering holes featuring “Sagres” that you folks have back there in the East.
On the other hand that may account for the folks shown in that last picture with the Portuguese flag upside down. Not just one, but at least two.
I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt and I’m assuming that they were drunk and not stupid.
