Result!

After a rough 90′, Portugal managed to squeak out a victory against a very physical and motivated Angola side. Figo and Pauleta combined for the only goal in this brutal match early in the first half. After that, it was all grind with Angola throwing their bodies at every offensive attack Portugal could muster. We “tugas” would have preferred another goal or two, but without Deco in the line up, we’ll take the 3 points.

Portugal didn’t play the kind of creative circulation ball we’re used to, but you have to give Angola credit for the disruption style of game they put together. There is no doubt that the lack of offensive creativity was in part due to the absence of “o magico” in the midfield lineup. Scolari opted to hold back Deco while he heals a bruised muscle. It wasn’t perfect but it was a positive result. One down and six more to go. Força Portugal!
