Ronaldo says “show me the money!”
This blog does its best to avoid trafficking unsubstantiated transfer rumors but once in a while you just have to get down and dirty. Following weeks of blatant flirtation, Barcelona appear to be ready for some serious foreplay in their effort to bed star winger Cristiano Ronaldo. With some help from a match making sheik, Barcelona is reportedly preparing a £30 million ($58 million) bid that would pay Ronaldo an estimated £160,000 ($312,000) per week.
Hoping to tame his wandering eye, Manchester United recently offered Ronaldo an increase to £100,000 per week – a drop in the bucket given the feeding frenzy around the Portuguese winger these days. Ronaldo, for his part, seems determined to strike while the iron is hot and has handed United an £8.3 ($16 million) million-a-year ultimatum. And who said romance was dead?
It may take a while for this love triangle to work itself out, but one thing is certain. Ronaldo is now master of his own destiny. Since the World Cup, he’s shown that he’s a man on a mission. Through sheer determination and hard work, he has proven the nay sayers wrong, on and off the pitch, and now stands ready to take the next big step in his young, and oh so promising, career.

If I were him I would stay at United if he receives close to what Barcelona is offering. Although at Barcelona him and Deco would play even more together as they are the strongest two players on the International team.
In terms of money, I think you will see Ronaldo over the next 5 years becoming as big as Beckham was. He is notably a better player that Beckham ever was and all the ladies love him the same. He needs to not worry so much about which team he plays for and what he is making a week because all that will come in time, especially with endorsements.

As a Man Utd and Portugal fan I hope that he stays for at least another year to continue showing everyone else in the league how it is done! If he must go, I hope it is to Barca to play with Deco rather than Real. However the press (especially in England) have probably blown the whole situation out of proportion so it is pretty much impossible to guess what is really going on.

Glad to have you back, happy to have the talkbacks as well.
Scolari wants CR to move to Spain where he thinks will give CR a chance to improve his game.
I think RM will make the bigger move as they “need” him more. Scolari will probably be the next coach of RM anyways, so it makes sense. Will La Liga help his game or hurt it?

From a uniquelly career perspective, for me, Man Utd is far better for him right now…
In Barca, OK, he’s got Deco and he’s got Ronaldinho, and these two (CR + Rdnho) together would complement eachother very well. They have different styles and both are way up there… Not to mention CR would benefit from the lessons. Maybe the other way arond too…
But at Man Utd he’s got nobody else for his place, has proven himself specially after the WC thing with Rooney, he’s already ahead of the score sheet this year, got the coach behind him 100%, has been playing at a level that man…, I mean, he’s rock solid there, with a lot still to learn. And if he’d go to Barcelona, I don’t think this has anything to do with $. I’m super happy Real didn’t show in the picture, cos this a place I’d hate to see him go…
Maybe he’ll head south, in search for less rain and decent food + a more technical style of play. BUT… Man Utd is Man Utd and the kid’s firmly decided to leave an even bigger mark at that club! I believe he will (already did some), if he stays there for some years more.

@Nelson: I think “La Liga” is the natural place for his type/style of play… I do believe he will not stay in England forever. But I don’t think it’s the best for him, right now…

I meant I don’t believe he will stay in ENG 4ever… Sorry

Hmm, as much as I like CR, if this rumour is true, I don’t like it at all. The season is not over, there will be no transfers till the end of the year. If you want to bargain, do it at the end of the season. The move is too greedy, possibly undermines teams objectives and to me would be a blotch on his character.
That said, I would prefer he stay with ManU and win some trophies this year and next. Win first, then get paid.
FORCA CR, don’t let the agents mess with your head, focus on the game before you and worry about money afterwards.
FORCA PORTUGAL!

Laurie – it must be the approaching Valentines Day.
OGT – This is all posturing before any real negotiations take place. To be honest, I think Ronaldo would do well at either Man U or Barcelona next year. The bottom line is that Ronaldo is way underpaid. Consider that Rooney is being paid an estimated £35 million over 6 years. He has his own qualities, but you can’t build a team around him like Fergie has done with Ronaldo. It’s a matter of fairness. Where ever he goes, his salary should reflect his ability and impact on the pitch. Like some of us have already stated, plenty of people tune into the EPL just to watch him do his thing. What’s that worth?
One other thing we need to keep in mind is that Fergie will retire sometime in the near future and I doubt Carlos Queiroz will take over for him. I’m sure that will weight on Ronaldo’s final decision, as both these guys are a huge part of why Ronaldo is still at Man U now.

I know this is totally off topic but I was just watching a show here in Canada (sportsworld)and they showed an amazing bicycle kick goal from Sporting Lisbon but I missed who it was and what game it was in. If anyone knows or can pass on a you tube link I would really appreciate it. Again sorry this is so off topic.

Daria – I think you mean Liedson in a Portugal Cup game. I saw it recently too, but on RTPi. I’ve been trying to find it ever since. Liedson does a bicycle kick from the top of the box. One of the most amazing goals I’ve ever seen.
I found it. Check out this Liedson wonder goal.

Thank you Luis that is exactly the one I am looking for! It was absolutlely amazing! On a totally different and once again off topic note, do any of the Canadians know if any portuguese football daily newspapers can be purchased in and around Toronto? Probably a stupid question but I thought I would ask anyway!

Daria – A Bola is usually available with advance order from local Portuguese grocery or specialty stores. I would check with them if you have one nearby.

ronaldo should go to spain in my opinion. he plays with the same style and has amazing talent and ball control. i tink if he goes to spain he is going to learn and become far better @ dribbling and keeping full control of the ball. right now in england they don`t play that kind of game. they are fast but pushy they have next to nothig for skill in they`re game, only reason the epl is so big and strong is because everyone that plays in it are from other countries, they have next to nothing for home grown talent, and treat soccer like a rugby match alot of the time. cristiano is far to advanced to be stuck there he needs to play with others that play the same style as him so he can become even better.

Well, ricardo, you’re being very critical with the EPL: There are lots of really good Englishmen playing in ENG, like John Terry, and Rooney too, somehow, although it’s impossible to build a team around him, as just said, and this Rooney would be completely useless in any other league.
CR, however, is still young enough to develop his very own style, which will be strongly influenced by the league he’s playing in. It depends what kind of Ronaldo our NT needs – a captain who takes responsibility, a strong attacker who doesn’t care about the rest of the team or a quick winger, winning all his duels.
The most important thing at this point of his career is his contentment at the club, and everything is his own decision, after all.

Check out the first of the gossip column…
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/gossip_and_transfers/6359985.stm
This also shows today in the portuguese press (the friends being Miguel and H Viana, by occasion of the match against BR), although I for one don’t believe in it… 1) It’s in “The Sun”; 2) Gut feeling…
I mean, just look at both Real and Barcelona… Real is now in a slow (re)building process, not really at the level a team with all those players + coach should be at. Barcelona will (I think, but maybe I’m wrong) start falling (emerging fusses between players and coach beggining + too many rumours).
This one (PT) shows Barcelona ex-vice president (Sandro Rosell) saying Barca didn’t get CR in 2003 for not having enough $ and also cos he stayed loyal to Sporting, at a time Man Utd were offering 12 million for him and the club needed $ badly (they always do).
http://www.maisfutebol.iol.pt/noticia.php?id=773635&div_id=1486
Back to Barcelona, Eto’o came publically stating Rijkaard is a bad person for “exposing him”, by saying to the press he refused to play – whether true or not, why in the hell would he give this to the press (?). Larsson is now at Man Utd and Ronaldinho will, hopefully, return to his form and show the world, and the Rijkaards of this world… Still, you have wolves there like Messi and others, who are simply not to be ignored and WILL give CR a run for his money, not to mention that if the club sinks, it’s the expensive tranfers that also get the blame (surelly not those other guys, who play 1 out of 3 or 4 matches, for this or that reason). At Man Utd, the guy’s a “King”, right now… And Man Utd are getting better and better, this season…

dont get me wrong i also like to watch a man u game. but i still say cr is to advanced for the epl, in no way does he get the respect he deserves from english fans, but when he scores a goal, they sure cheer to no end. the boos might make him stronger in some ways but im sure after awhile they get to him just like they would get to anyone. i would have made simao or ricardo captin before cr. but i think cr will do a great job regardless, people say anybody can do a step over. but how many can do them and get passed 3 or 4 defenders? as far as rooney goes he has a good shot but could never get the chance if he didnt have a player like cr or giggs setting him up for it. cr has the know how to set himself up and get goals on his own. if he played with people with the same level or better talent than him i think he would start doing alot better, which makes for a better game to watch and would do wonders for portugal in the fifa rankings, and now with quaresma on the other side i think portugal is ready to do some damage in the euros.

You might remember an older post, here, that went on about whether or not Sporting Lisbon’s striker Liedson should apply for portuguese citizenship, in order to join the NT and (also) help out on what is the portuguese weakest point in the team – the #9.
A couple of years ago, I imagine even before the Scolari era (2003), brazilian born Derlei went through exactly the same…

Left Boavista to FCPorto, where he ended up getting the UEFA and the Champs, 03 and 04. Then he moved to Moscow but now he’s back in Portugal, playing for SLBenfica, who beat Bucarest 1-0 yesterday evening.
