This was posted by Pedro P, one of our regular bloggers. I thought you might enjoy watching some of Ronaldo’s all time best muggings…erhh, I mean “dives”. If you can’t keep up with him, then by all means hack him.

Força Ronaldo! Força Portugal!

Wow, I knew Ronaldo was the biggest diver but never realized the extent of it.

Well, those are not all “dives”… There are lot that are terrible fouls on him. The title is “Knocked Down” for a reason.

But the one that gets the crown was the dive C. Ronaldo did against France on that header in the penalty box. That was beautiful! I’ll never forget it. I am laughing now. Then, he got up and complained they didn’t give him a penalty kick!

He was… But he also dived, if it’s the one I’m thinking of (sorry, Luis)! ;-)

Anyway, one thing that became obvious to me, and surelly not just because of C Ronaldo or Henry, is that most people call a dive to something, if a lot of people also do it; and then sometimes don’t even recognize one, if most of the people are quiet about it. No matter the nationality of who did it.

In the 80’s (at least, I believe so), there weren’t as many dives as today. And I guess it all began with the players kinda “helping” the ref. That is, if they felt contact especially inside the box), they’d dive. If they were tackled, they’d start shouting and screaming, throwing themselves on the floor, etc…

A lot of portuguese players did dive, in WC06. What about the others…? What I’ve always found ridiculously hypocrit, is that a lot of people state, like they really believe it, that Portugal was the king of divers! I mean, if it’s the dutch or english “delegation”, I can totally understand this type of coments… But when Henry dived like an idiot (Portugal, Spain – it was a direct yellow in the stunt he pulled with Puyol), when so many others did it AND actually took adavantage of it… And then it’s all the usual cliches… Southern europeans are cheats and divers (Spain would also be one, if only they’d reached further); Materazzi is the devil because he got a head-butt in his chest from Zidane, and because Zidane is god, it could only have been Materazzi’s fault. If it’d have been a guy nobody knows, HE’d be the devil for actually GIVING that blow… I guess that nothing surprises me anymore… :-)

FORCA PORTUGAL – O EURO 2008 SERA NOSSO! :-)

No need to apologize Pedro. :-) I’m not blind or unwilling to criticize PT or it’s players. It’s the double standard that makes me nuts. You explained it very well in your comment.

Just imagine if that Mendes incident was reversed and a PT player had assaulted an English player like that. They would try to burn down the Algarve. At least English fans are showing that they do have some good sense in this matter. The outrage over this incident in England makes me think there is hope for the English game.
