Scolari’s 2 midfields

June 21st, 2006 | By: Luis Paulo | 1 Comment »

If you noticed the 11 starters on the match against Iran, you noticed that the midfield was completely different. While at the first game Simão, Tiago and Petit started at the second one none of them did. The reason for that is called Deco.

Scolari is whiling to give Costinha and Maniche their chance, even though they lack game consistence, once that Deco is playing. The reason for that is the chemistry developed by them on their years playing together at Porto and at the National Team.

When Deco is no able to play, Scolari prefers to use a better fitted midfield, especially because they’ve been training together.

I’m not quite sure if this is the best choice, but at least it’s an original one.

Indeed. As Scolari has stated, we need to improvise to overcome our weaknesses. The starting 11 for Iran, and for most of Euro2004, is considered Scolari’s preferred 11. We haven’t seen them at their best yet, but Scolari is hoping they’ll shine as we get (knock on wood) further into the second round.

What surprises me is how Scolari’s ‘plan B’, as it’s called in the media, has gained a consistency of it’s own, managing to grind out results when we need them most. It hasn’t been easy but Scolari is smart to call on our depth to get us through the rough times.

Força Portugal!
