Scolari tells C. Ronaldo to Chill

June 4th, 2006 | By: Dan Lourenço | 12 Comments »

Big Phil warned Cristiano Ronaldo to keep his temper in check at the Word Cup, after receiving yet another yellow card in Portugal’s warm up match with Luxembourg yesterday.

“It’s a situation that worries me because the majority of our opponents provoke Cristiano and he does not know how to deal with it,” Scolari told RTP. “Our opponents know that if they get at Cristiano he will react this way. Cristiano has to understand that he is part of a group and these attitudes hurt the entire group and not just him. We need to show Cristiano the difficulties which he has to face because decisive games are coming up. I am sure he will listen to me and his teammates beacause it is crucial that this type of imprudent act not be repeated at the World Cup.”

Ronaldo, to be fair, was getting hacked all night, but he reacted to a foul by pushing his opponent in the throat. Cristiano apologized for this after the game: “You can see my foot and leg, this was not easy but this doesn’t justify my reaction. I expect not to do it again so as not to be penalized at the World Cup,” he said.

My thoughts? Why, I’m glad you asked.

I think if Cristiano Ronaldo wants to entertain the thought of being selected for “Best Young Player” at the tournament, he needs to control his actions. No doubt Fair Play is considered for the award. We don’t need another “Joao Pinto incident,” as someone on the blog has said. So before he begins playing “Neo” on the pitch and dazzles his opponents a la The Matrix, he needs to control his temper. That being said, I’m glad he at least acknowledges that he acted out and makes it a point to not react in this way. I’m also impressed with Scolari’s no-B.S. attitude. Every time Ronaldo acts up, he takes him out. That’s important for the team. You probably wouldn’t see that with Antonio Oliveira, as Portugal was an undisciplined squad while under his command in the 2002 World Cup.

Also, I hope he’s keeping his “tricks” under wraps, because I didn’t see any during the past 2 warm up games.

Força Portugal!

Ronaldo always gets hacked in every game he plays. He knows it’s coming yet he reacts this way. When he plays for Man. U. he has a frustrating game from time to time, but he never reacts this way. Why have the last two friendlies been different? Who knows. The kid has a lot of pressure on him, but that’s not new. From interviews I read with him recently, I think he’s anxious to get this show started. With all the hype, I think he just wants the tourney to begin so he can do his thing. I hope we’ll see a different Ronaldo once the games count — I hope so anyway. Força Portugal!

I think he is was just really upset cause it is a friendly and some idiot could cost him a chance to play in what could be the biggest games in his life and one of the better teams Portugal has ever had.

Also undoubtedly, the fire burns a bit brighter when playing for NT than when playing for ManU. Plus he knows Ferguson won’t tolerate that stuff, and Scolari has done well to demonstrate likewise.

I do think think he will excercise better judgement at the WC.

What I do think is a problem is if he heaps pressure on himself to be spectacular at the WC, he needs to play as part of the team, and just let it happen.

Ronnie needs to just do his part. After all he is only a piece of the Ferrari which is the National Team. Problem is Ronaldo thinks he’s the Stallion in this Ferrari. He is not.. He needs to just fulfill his role, stay focused and let things happen. He’ll shine if he can achieve this.. there will be opportunities for the Twinkle Toe tricks.. the behind the leg crosses, the endless stepovers… the explosive accelarations down the wing.. and the occasional embarrasment of Ronaldo dieking his own self out with this schmancy moves..but first things is first..let’s hit the opponent first and put ourselves in a cruise control position.

I agree W Gomes. He should focus more on his role on the team. He’s proven at Man U. that he can be lethal without the tricks, but I don’t mind seeing some fancy stuff throughout his game as long as it is at the right time. It all comes with experience. If I was that good at his age, it would be hard to resist the urge. I’m surprised he as focused as he is. If it were me, I would probably blow it all on women. :-)

In his defense, he wasn’t showing off in either friendly game. He was just getting hacked mercilously. Força Ronaldo! Força Portugal!

Luis, Ronaldo has better control of his tricks these days. He’s showing signs of maturity (regardless of that matrix talk)

It wouldn’t be crazy to expect him to have illusions of grandeur with all the press he’s received in England and all the additional hype and sponsorship deals. I am just saying he needs to reboot that ego of his and bring it home! He needs to understand that his importance to the team is to server a function of service and speed. Lately i see him being a little selfish in his attitude. I hope Scolari straightens him out.
