Survivor – Portugal 1 x 0 Holland – match review

June 26th, 2006 | By: Luis Paulo | 139 Comments »

What a game! After 60 years of peace, Nuremberg was once again a battlefield. Portuguese and Dutch fought for 90 minutes in a game filled with emotion. Maniche showed to be lucky against the Dutch and Portugal reached the quarter-finals. It is a day to remember.

What work out right:

- Thanks to Miguel, Robben didn’t play at all. The Portuguese right back, together with Ricardo Carvalho were giants on the right side of Portugal’s defense. He also found the way to help the offense in some counter attacks.
- Maniche was the man of the match. He not only scored but also was responsible on most of Portugal’s goal chances.
- Figo again showed to be at his best moment. He didn’t do better because Portugal lost its only striker.
- Simão came into the game adding some speed to the counter attack. He will probably start the next game.
- Today everybody saw exactly how should be the team attitude. This is how you should act at a World Cup. Winning, whatever it takes! Did you see Ronaldo crying? Ronaldo, I bow for you!

What didn’t work out at all:

- Costinha should be sent off 20 minutes before. He was so irresponsible and almost jeopardized the whole team.
- Deco was also sent off in an immature play. He didn’t need to hold that ball. Everybody is getting a yellow card in similar plays.
- Van Persie did whatever he wanted on the left. Both Nuno Valente and Fernando Meira couldn’t stop him.
- We now play against England hoping that our players don’t get suspended to a possible semi-final.

Richard,
I think the only motivation behind your comment is that you fear a possible match up! I am sure you would see things different had it been one of your young rising stars who was hurt….oh I am sorry, you have no young rising stars, just the same old, boring unmotivated, sleepy players on the field.

Assumptions are always dangerous my friends. I’m a Hollander living in Paris, so go ahead and slag off the French :) You gain a certain objectivity after your team has been eliminated. You guys are still in the zone, enjoy for as long it last. I’m missing it already.

Richard,
A Hollander living in Paris!WOW I never thought I would see this, you have managed to find a more cynical country to live in than Holland! That’s amazing. No wonder your poor taste in soccer teams! I guess there are sore Hollanders everywhere huh? Go figure!

Dee, I also lived in the US before. While there I was always suprised by the lack of understanding of different cultures and countries around the world. It was clearly shown again by your reaction. P.S. I’m not sore

Richard,
I don’t know where you lived in the US but where I live poeple have a great understanding of other countries and cultures. After all we have people here represented from many nations in the world!

When you assume that “Scolari told his boys – we are stuffed if we keep playing football. Lets use our experince(sic) and trick these youngsters with some good old theatre and we are though(sic)”

and I quote “Assumptions are always dangerous my friends”

You really have contridicted yourself!

Richard,
No offense, but I think that you have shown here that you are the one indeed who needs to grow up.

Moving along, I have a question for you? How do you think your team with do against Brazil (without Zidane), he is ill, no?

Stop bashing this poor Richard, I watched him drink himself stupid the other night with his yankie mates. He is not bad guy you know, just dissappointed, like I am. Imagine what happened if Cocu had missed the bar! That being said I will be supporting England because there is just too much garlic munchers left…

There I was cheering for my team, secretly of course. I’m sitting with the enemy. Screaming I rose to my feet in joy as my team scored. Ooophs not a secret anymore who I was going for. War broke out in my lounge room and I’m sitting in France, but only for a minute, war was breaking out on the field, better place to be for me. Christ you should have seen my husband and friends, they almost crusified me, they were Dutch, christ I’m Australian. The best team won in my eyes, bloody Dutch they have one eye and that shines were the sun finds it hard to find shelter in. Go Portugal for the finals. Sorry Rich and Marnix

It’s Amazing that a country as small as Portugal, with approximitly only (10) Ten million population came this far,as opposed to countries like most in this world cup with a larger population. They play with their team B and still win, with 9 against 11 and still win.Portugal you have my respect, may the force be with you. Even if you lose against England. You can still be very Proud of your acheivements. God Bless You All+the coach Mr. Scolarti

its really amazing how these portuguese posters, most of whom live in foreign countries(whats wrong with portugal??!!) get really abusive with anyone who disagrees with them. Is it in the genes? it’s really funny all these insults, so predictable too. Is it that the emigres feel they have to support the mother-country even more? pathetic, you should be ashamed of yourselves..posting quality poor and humourless.

Michiel,i h8 typing but i just couldnt read that bunch of crap u left here without replying 2 it.Let me first translate it 4 ppl that dont speak Dutch(why should they really)u wrote : “Als ik niet beter wist zou ik zeggen dat deze arme portugese stakkers Ivanov om hebben gekocht met het overvloedige subsidiegeld dat Nederland aan Portugal heeft geschonken. Natuurlijk weet ik beter. Hollywood zou verplaatst moeten worden naar Portugal, reken maar dat er sowieso al 11 spelers zijn die zich aanmelden.”
Here goes : “If i knew better id say that these poor Portuguese losers have bribed Yvanov with the remaining subsidial money that Netherlands gave to Portugal.Of course i know better.
Hollywood should be moved to Portugal there will be at least 11 players in the line-up”
I wont go in on the Hollywood detail thats not worth my typing but how dare u type something like the Netherlands ever gave us money ??? The last thing we need is money especially from the Netherlands. If the Netherlands ever did give us money its bcuz the owe it to us since ur ancestors couldnt do anything else then rob the enemy(read Portuguese) from its hard earned and fought for gold and other treasures.Unlike the Dutch the Portuguese were known(and as u see we still are) for their patriotism, heroismand their adventurous and discovering spirit. And as u see that aslo reflects on the pitch during those 90 min(or more if needed)As for the Dutch their history also reflects on the pitch. They didnt try for 1 minute 2 win the game following the rules. It was stealing, robbing and plundering from the begining just like history ans also like history we once more emerged victorious simply by believing we could and also thanks too the way the Dutch entered the game.If id know better id say we won the game thanks too the Dutch being so low and unsporty. If they had started of with nice clean soccer they might had won the match, but i guess i do know better.Thank u Netherlands.
And if u still feel frustrations u need 2 unleash Michiel i’ll b happy 2 help u out im from Amsterdam so the distance wouldnt b a prob i guess.

God is only with those who believe,non-believers have to do it with their own strength only.

Richard if there is 1 nation that also has no understanding or respect of/for other cultures and puts itself on top of all id have 2 say its the Netherlands and i kno cuz i live amongst these non believers without any kinda culture or history.Maybe some studying bout other cultures and countries and less prejudice might help Holland getting further in such tournaments.
And its ppl like u and Richard that i also replied to earlier that make good ppl like me( and like most portuguese are hard tax paying workers)leave the country their parents were lured to in the begining and behind will only stay the so called “rotten apples” u know what i mean dont ya ? Id prefer bing investing my sweat in Portugal than in Holland 4 sure !
So keep up the good work yall orange losers,im first on that list and bhind me i think loads more.
Dont show any respect if its not mutual.
Força Portugal vamos levar isto até ao fim!

Srry 4 the long post and mayb most of u wont see the link btween what i wrote and soccer but this goes back 2 the very essence.History does matter its a reflection of what we are and do today.
I just hate prejudice ppl who speak along with what the media says.
Damn that was alot of typing even 4 sum1 that hates typing butt ill do alot when it comes 2 defending my country. :)
