Tasty treats
![]()
According to a report on RTPi (satellite), our team is getting all the comforts of home. The dietary team is thinking strategy too. They don’t just feed our boys. They’re part of the team and play a very important role in crafting the mental attitude of the players. It turns out that our boys get a little spoiled on days they come home with a win. On those happy occassions, they get specially imported ‘pasteis de nata’ (cream custard pastries), straight from Portugal.
“Yes, if they win, we eat ‘pasteis de nata’. It’s a reward and makes them feel closer to Portugal. As long as they keep winning, we’ll keep giving them their treat,” explained one of their food techs with a wink.
I knew Scolari was into mind games, but that’s really minding the details. We all know how good these delicious treats are. Lets hope the team has appetite for at least 4 more of them. On July 9th, they can have a whole dozen each, of course.
Força Portugal!

It is a bit nauseating hearing you all speak about advancing further. You are here for the first time in decades and you dare talk about finals. Keep on dreaming.

Fabio, what’s your problem?? Is it so wrong for a supporter of a national team to have faith and be a little optimistic? Who are you supporting?
We may not have qualified for the World Cup consistently but we are definately a top team. We made it to the finals to the Euro 2004. Who says we can’t make it to the finals of the World Cup?
I’m not going to spend any more time responding to you, it’s not worth it…

And this was supposed to be a post about sweets. Took fabio to make it sour.

Obviously I meant that if we are lucky enough to make it to the final, then they can eat as many as they want.

Luis and Dan, you guys are right. Lets all enjoy the Cup and keep rooting for our teams.
I will sour the sweets no more.
By the way, Scolari is a great with mind games and an excellent motivator!

Thanks Fabio. Good luck to your team whoever they might be.

Hi Jan, it’s about good food. Something the dutch will never understand…
Glad to see you left out van Nistelrooy there… He doesn’t give a 6 year old a nightmare…
Your guys are likelly to cause us just what the likes of Figo, Maniche, Pauleta and C Ronaldo will cause YOU… With the big plus, they did it already a few times…
Seriously, I think it’s gonna be very tight…

I agree Pedro. It will be a very tight match. Most commentators and odds pickers are choosing Holland and Argentina to advance to the quarters. We got a little more respect for a good group phase performance, but we’re still under estimated. That’s fine with me. I’m happy to grind out one result after another, without much fanfare.

Forca Portugal! We have what it takes. Just look how France, italy, Brazil ect are playing. We can do it. Why we get no respect is beyond me but that is o.k. We has Portuguese fans know what they can to and we have faith. So for others to come on this blog and cut us down for no reason is beyond me considering we have never said a bad thing about our opponents.
That shows the quality of our people.
Forca Portugal!!!

You silly Iranians. You guys are better at producing nuclear weapons than results in a World Cup.

Your name sort of comes right out of a Hitler joke, HANS…
I believe the match against HOL will be very dificult. Iran was, Angola was too, Mexico even worse. Holland must be dificult, like all the others. BUT… Respect is something Portugal rarely had – also fine with me, we actually might go home next sunday. I am, though, somewhat surprised bookmakers forget HOL doesn’t win from us since 1991, we won 5 times and drew 3, and that we have 9 points vs their 7. I’ve hurde so many times POR was favoured by the refs in 04 because it was home, but I’ve also hurde almost all the dutch admiting POR was better, 2 years ago.
There are other teams better than Portugal (Brazil, Argentina, etc). But that doesn’t mean we cannot win.

@pedro
Hmmm… that food remark hit home. Dutch food sucks big time, you’re right. Boerenkool. Zuurkool. Hutspot. Karnemelkse pap. I think Portugal would win the cooking contest alright…
And the Diving contest. And the whining about cards contest.
But we’ll see in a couple of days who plays best football and who will win (2 seperate things…). But, which team is remembered from the ‘74 WC??? Not Germany! There’s only one who can win the WC, but any team can rock the world with great football skills. Why don’t the Portugeuze try it once

Hallo Jan!
Diving: If there’s one thing almost all the dutch agree, is that Portugal are diving champions, just like all the south europeans and south americans. Whereas the dutch, of course, are angels. You gotta stop with this hypocrisy. I guess only people with poor eyesight or people who actually don’t see the matches can say that. But OK… It’s a free world… Take a look at any Man Utd, Chelsea match and observe RvN or Robben who’s almost always injured or on the floor). Than, compare it with Figo, for example (I know all about it, you’ll say Figo is the worst of them all, which will actually prove me right)…
Playing good football and not getting anywhere and being considered wanna-bees, has been our history. With all due respect, Portugal has been playing better football than HOL, consistently, since 2000. You don’t beat us since 91.
This time, we’ve been seeing less thrilling plays from POR, but guess what… 9 points are in the bag. Most of the mistakes, or less good moments, have been defending an advantage. Remember, HOL wasn’t impressive either against IVC or S&M. Your best game was the one that didn’t count and it had very little goal chances for both sides.
About the team everybody remembers from 74, I can always answer with the team everybody remembers from 66…
Now you wanna compare what…? Eusebio with Cruyf…? POR and HOL are both good teams, period.
Let’s just say both teams are different than 2 years ago. As everybody saw the EC is far different than a WC (defense is so much more important in the WC – actuall, until the final, one can only loose the WC – not win it). It will be very tight. Victory will be made on the little details and the little mistakes. It’ll also be a nerve game, as the one who wins gets a boast of confidence and knows it has overcome a mighty oponent in the first of the knock-outs.
