Team of 2010 Tuesday: Who’s the Boss?

June 24th, 2008 | By: Greg | 15 Comments »

Now that the Euro is over for us and focus must begin on the qualification for the 2010 World Cup, we are left with the small issue of presently being without a captain for the Good Ship Porkychop.

Speculation abounds but the only name that’s been somewhat officially thrown out there is Jose Pekerman, formerly of a handful of Argentinian junior national teams and the head coach of the senior Argentinian national team that got to the quarter finals of the 2006 World Cup. His success was primarily with the youth teams, leading them to a great many different championships at a number of levels.

I’m not particularly wild about the guy and would prefer other speculated possibilities such as Brazilian Zico who had his most recent success with Turkish side Fenerbahçe or Carlos Queiroz, who is currently Sir Alex’s right hand man at Manchester United. Queiroz has experience and success similar to that of Pekerman’s on the youth level and has recently been approached by Portuguese giants Benfica as well as being tapped by Sir Alex himself as his successor in waiting at ManU. The Powers that Be are allegedly having a pow-wow to discuss the next Portugal manager next week, but before they get to choose our destiny, any other fun and crazy ideas out there for who can lead us to the promised land?

Ugh, not Pekerman…I would prefer someone younger, preferably a coach that speaks Portuguese.

Zico did some wonders with Fernerbahce, and they definitely play with style and passion.

I don’t think Queiroz will take it, he’s too invested in Man U for a possible takeover in 3-4 years. Didn’t he already have a stint in charge anyway? And it didn’t go so well? Or was that just the youth team?

I vote Zico

Luxemburgo is my guess! Zico has too little of a track record! Fenerbahce en Japan don’t really have stars.

Queiroz would be fantastic but he’ll never take it.

And it definitely has to be a foreigner who is very distant from the players to have authority and earn their respect. The portuguese can’t handle guy who is a ‘mate’ like Bilic.

Luxemburgo is set to take over Brazil, or already has. Dunga got sacked.

Zico looks like the most likely candidate at the moment. However, Rijkard’s name has also been mentioned. Personally, I’d perfer Rijkard over Zico.

But if only Jose Moruinho could’ve waited a couple more months before signing with Inter. Jose would’ve been perfecto.

Pekerman, the same guy who took off Riquelme, didn’t use Messi which costed Argentina the quarter-final against Germany? No thanks.

My dream pick would of course be Guus Hiddink, alas he’s tied down with Russia. I wouldn’t mind a German coach, such as Klinsmann to give the ‘team’ some team spirit too bad Germans don’t speak Portuguese. :p

The names I´ve been reading are pretty much the ones you write.
I have absolutelly no idea as to who will it be…

I´d go for a portuguese. BUT it doesn´t seem it will… It´s gotta be either Mourinho, Queiroz, Manuel José or somebody from the “inner circle” (the ones coaching in PT or abroad since recent times). Mourinho´s taken. Queiroz is incompatible with FPF president, Madaíl. Manuel José is probably incompatible with even more people. And I´d leave the “inner circle” quiet…

So, a foreigner… I´d go for a south american – although I´d always prefer a coach that could speak portuguese (brazillian) but a spanish speaking coach isn´t that bad – spanish is damn easy for us to understand while they have a much harder time to understand portuguese. From Brasil, other than Scolari, I don´t see anyone fit for the job. Zico has been talked about, mainly cos HE has been talking about himslef for the job. I don´t think he could get us to a tittle. Pekerman from Argentina… Don´t know much about him. But it could be nice to get argentinian influences. Scoalri was a brazillian, so pretty much “the same” as us. ARG lost in the quarters, last world cup. I guess anybody would expect them to go further… They did lose to Germany… I believe it should be someone from the same football culture we have, so a south american would be pefect (on paper).

First let´s see whether Madaíl will (finally) leave the FPF president chair. Rumours says he´s leaving but will decide first who will be the new coach. To me this is stupid, cos by doing so, he´s condicioning the next president.

Guus Hiddink could be a good choice, though he´s good in making underdogs reach high. Don´t remember what he did when coaching the dutch (I think he coached them). PT is hardly an underdog anymore and any place below the last 4 will always be a defeat (depending on the players we might have or not). He´s probably expensive too…

As far as I´m concerned, Rijkaard would never get the job. I just don´t think he could deal with the portuguese culture and character that well. Plus he was the reason why Quaresma ended up leaving Barça, as far as I know, and he also benched Deco this year.

PT is now a top team, I´m sure candidates will pop up. Just hope we´re as lucky as we were with Scolari. Though I was very dissappointed with him this euro, PT owes him a lot…

The choice of new manager for Portugal is absolutely crucial as team morale will be very low. Our qualifying group is not that easy and any slip up will be punished with serious consequences. Therefore it is essential that we get the new manager right as he has 3 problems – the first and most important is to rebuild the defence, out go Ricardo, Boswinga and Fereira who are not world class. Carvalho also had a bad game but he is world class and I would keep him. The second is to drop Petit and bring in a new hard man in midfield. Third it is to rebuild the attack as Nuno Gomes cannot be expected to lead us to the World Cup. The biggest problem is rebuilding Ronaldo who was terrible in not just the Germany game but most of the group games also. There is a helluva lot to do.

Please not Pekerman! The Argentines don’t even like him. Not Rijkaard, for the same reasons as mentioned above. Mourinho is a no, he will be our coach after the next Euros. I still think they will hire a portuguese speaking chap. I just have no clue who.

Hi.
I agree with some names given above specially Guus Hiddink. In my opinion he would be perfect for the Portuguese team. He has shown great tactic knowledge, he adapted very well to distinct cultures and, above all, he has shown good results while coaching several different teams. Of course that he must be very expensive, and I don’t know if he’s still tied with Russia after the Euro08. Let’s see…

The new port national coach should not be portuguese. The reason being is they tend to be weak and corrupt in their team selection…giving into pressure to play players that are looking to be sold (by the big 3 of portugal). Mr. Oliveira being the last national coach guilty of this (to the point of ridiculousness)…and really that’s why many including Figo wanted a foreign coach. I would contend Sven Goran Eriksson would be best. He did nothing w. England but that’s no shocker. He is intelligent, practical and is not afraid to play to win games which is what the national team needs from their leader. For a team so skillful it boggles me how defensive they play at times. Plus he knows the ins and outs of portugal’s football an he’s not opposed to a 4-4-2 formation, the formation I would prefer to see portugal play.

Sven is an interesting choice…but he’s tied to Mexico now…lets see if he can do anything with them,

I agree that a foreigner would probably be the best, for the reasons mentioned above…but how about a former player?

Figo is still playing, and Rui Costa just took a position with Benfica, but how about someone like Paulo Futre? He’s out of football now, but was a director at Atletico Madrid for a few years

A lot of young coaches break ground with their former national teams first…though I suppose he (or anyone else) would have to show interest before it was offered.

Figo said he doesn’t see himself coaching the NT after he retires from football. But that’s what they all say.

Regardless we need a better, high-quality coach to steer us towards 2010. England have Capello, while Lippi is returning to Italy. Mexico have Erikson, and Deschamps will likely coach the new France. All these teams will no doubt be re-built. The competition will be high, we need to remain above it.

We need a proven hard nosed coach… We need someone who has the Scolari strengths with a more dare i say “German dicipline” feel. Portuguese need to learn to add a little more structure and dicipline to their game so whoever comes in needs to have that feel. Too bad Capello isnt free, Figo is way too young and inexperienced… let him coach the under 20 team first…. Murinho has already said not yet… so lets be patient.

i think you need a coach who can make changes on the fly. too many times when portugal goes down in a game they cannot come back. why is that?

could it be that scolari stuck with the 4-5-1 like it was his lifeline. when you do not have a top 10 forward in the world you cannot expect to play the 4-5-1 and come from behind.

i also feel that they need changes in the defense and need to move on from petit and simao as big minute players. simao is great when he comes off the bench but too many times he made bonehead plays in the euros.

ronaldo, nani and quaresma are more than enought talent to build a hell of a midfield around but you need a hard nosed player who can play players like ballack off the ball. maniche used to be that which compliments from defensive players like jorge andrade use to be able to do that. this team had no one on one stoppers and that is where they were burnt.
