i think you need a coach who can make changes on the fly. too many times when portugal goes down in a game they cannot come back. why is that?

could it be that scolari stuck with the 4-5-1 like it was his lifeline. when you do not have a top 10 forward in the world you cannot expect to play the 4-5-1 and come from behind.

i also feel that they need changes in the defense and need to move on from petit and simao as big minute players. simao is great when he comes off the bench but too many times he made bonehead plays in the euros.

ronaldo, nani and quaresma are more than enought talent to build a hell of a midfield around but you need a hard nosed player who can play players like ballack off the ball. maniche used to be that which compliments from defensive players like jorge andrade use to be able to do that. this team had no one on one stoppers and that is where they were burnt.

We need a proven hard nosed coach... We need someone who has the Scolari strengths with a more dare i say "German dicipline" feel. Portuguese need to learn to add a little more structure and dicipline to their game so whoever comes in needs to have that feel. Too bad Capello isnt free, Figo is way too young and inexperienced... let him coach the under 20 team first.... Murinho has already said not yet... so lets be patient.

Figo said he doesn't see himself coaching the NT after he retires from football. But that's what they all say.

Regardless we need a better, high-quality coach to steer us towards 2010. England have Capello, while Lippi is returning to Italy. Mexico have Erikson, and Deschamps will likely coach the new France. All these teams will no doubt be re-built. The competition will be high, we need to remain above it.

Sven is an interesting choice...but he's tied to Mexico now...lets see if he can do anything with them,

I agree that a foreigner would probably be the best, for the reasons mentioned above...but how about a former player?

Figo is still playing, and Rui Costa just took a position with Benfica, but how about someone like Paulo Futre? He's out of football now, but was a director at Atletico Madrid for a few years

A lot of young coaches break ground with their former national teams first...though I suppose he (or anyone else) would have to show interest before it was offered.

The new port national coach should not be portuguese. The reason being is they tend to be weak and corrupt in their team selection...giving into pressure to play players that are looking to be sold (by the big 3 of portugal). Mr. Oliveira being the last national coach guilty of this (to the point of ridiculousness)...and really that's why many including Figo wanted a foreign coach. I would contend Sven Goran Eriksson would be best. He did nothing w. England but that's no shocker. He is intelligent, practical and is not afraid to play to win games which is what the national team needs from their leader. For a team so skillful it boggles me how defensive they play at times. Plus he knows the ins and outs of portugal's football an he's not opposed to a 4-4-2 formation, the formation I would prefer to see portugal play.

Hi.
I agree with some names given above specially Guus Hiddink. In my opinion he would be perfect for the Portuguese team. He has shown great tactic knowledge, he adapted very well to distinct cultures and, above all, he has shown good results while coaching several different teams. Of course that he must be very expensive, and I don't know if he's still tied with Russia after the Euro08. Let's see...

Please not Pekerman! The Argentines don't even like him. Not Rijkaard, for the same reasons as mentioned above. Mourinho is a no, he will be our coach after the next Euros. I still think they will hire a portuguese speaking chap. I just have no clue who.

The choice of new manager for Portugal is absolutely crucial as team morale will be very low. Our qualifying group is not that easy and any slip up will be punished with serious consequences. Therefore it is essential that we get the new manager right as he has 3 problems - the first and most important is to rebuild the defence, out go Ricardo, Boswinga and Fereira who are not world class. Carvalho also had a bad game but he is world class and I would keep him. The second is to drop Petit and bring in a new hard man in midfield. Third it is to rebuild the attack as Nuno Gomes cannot be expected to lead us to the World Cup. The biggest problem is rebuilding Ronaldo who was terrible in not just the Germany game but most of the group games also. There is a helluva lot to do.
