The Sound of Music

May 18th, 2006 | By: Luis Paulo | 9 Comments »

After using Roberto Leal’s songs during the Euro04, Luiz Felipe Scolari is now picking songs for the 2006 World Cup. The musician Pedro Ribeiro was put in charge to choose the songs to cheer up the players and to make the trip more comfortable.

Which song would you choose to cheer up the national team?

Roberto Leal…? The guy who uses brasilian accent in Portugal and portuguese accent in Brazil…? I didn’t even know this happened.

Man, if he pursues this line, I don’t know what’s gonna happen… ;-)

Laim is a compliment… Childhood memories as well…

Maybe the idea behind it, in Scolari’s mind, was to force the players to listen to the guy, in case they loose… ;-)

I think he has to include “O Homem Do Leme” by “Xutos e Pontapes”….. besides being an appropriate name for a band, the song remains an incredibly strong calling to follow your dream despite the risk of failure. And its just a great song.

and maybe a fado track or two… something stirring like “Cançao do Mar” by Amalia…

Força Portugal!!!!

“Xutos & Pontapes” is the most apropriate name a band could have, for the occasion… :-) .
“Homem do Leme” is not just a classic from portuguese rock, it’s also something I’m sure guys from Figo’s generation would still listen to. I did – same age. And it is kinda timeless. This tittle is also the most apropriate for Scolari… How do you translate this into english. Can’t say the “Man on the Rudder / Man on the Steering Weel”… :-)

I’d put the full lyrics (they are very good, considering it’s a rock song) but then it’d be too log. Check it out, LP, as I don’t think Xutos are known in Brasil.

Some Madredeus, some Xutos (to relax), some more contemporary (maybe “Da Weasel” – the hip hop guys who made the GALP add) AND I’d surelly take some brasillian music as well (sorry LP – music is universal). Caetano, Gil, Chico Buarque, and some Marisa Monte, would do the trick… ;-)

Portuguese rock??? I can tell it SUCKS even before listening to it. So many good variety of music in Portugal, why go for rock? I bet no one listens to rock in the Portuguese squad anyway.

Thanks for the positive contribution, Tom…

There is, indeed, a lot of portuguese excellent music. Not just rock…

That song in particular, IS a classic of portuguese rock and is a part of Portugal’s recent music history (70’s-80’s). At least listen to it, or learn something about something, before starting to fire away…
