Tuesday Tactics Time: Who’s Your XI on August XX?

With Charlie Q. set to make his national team debut against the Faroe Islands on August 20th, everyone has to begin to wonder who he’s planning on throwing out there against this formidable friendly foe.

First off, Ronaldo’s a no go due to his surgery (and, clearly, with an impending transfer from Portugal’s national team to Spain’s) so his position is open. Also, new boss Key Roach has no immediate attachments to “Scolari” guys due to the fact that he wasn’t ever in Scolari’s back office (Big Phil don’t swing that way). These two facts make for an interesting debut team selection as well as starting line up.

Assuming Charlie’s busy with other engagements for this match and you’ve earned your dream temp position as Portugal boss, who do you think will be his first official starting XI? Also feel free to offer any further thoughts on formation, bench, etc you wish to expound on.

Christian, I’m for that lineup except switching Maniche’s lil bro for Miguel. However, the thought of a 20 yr old Patricio in net scares me for Sporting. Imagine how much fear it strikes into my heart for the National Team.

Greg,

I havent seen Riberio play enough to make a call on him, that’s why I went with Miguel. Common sense says to go with your call on Riberio because he’s actually a Left Back (Shocking!). You’re rather savy in terms of your knowledge of Portuguese players so I’m fine with the switch from Miguel to Mr. Riberio…I also love Miguel, so I was slightly biased in putting him in LB. Anyway, like Nelson said we can throw in one of our grandparents at LB and they would be better than Paulo.

As for Rui, I just want him to get experience. Especially against the Faroe Islands. I think we can score enough goals against them that if Rui messes up here or there, we will still avoid embarassment. (btw, whatever happened to that young goalie that was supposed to be nasty that played for Benfica? Morreira or something?)

Also, anyone is better than this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SUpyIPsB7m0

If only someone had sent this video to Scolari, maybe we would have gotten past the Germans…

Rui Patricio,
Bosinga, Pepe, Carvalho, Ribeiro,
Nani, Moutinho, Fernandes, Quaresma,
Almeida, Yannick
My thinking here is Patricio definitely needs to get experience (Ricardo should never play again); I think a flat 4 in midfield would work with multi-talented central midfielders which Moutinho is…Fernandes I know is controversial but I just think he is one of the most ridiculously naturally talented central midfielders this country has ever produced and whenever he has played consistently he’s been bloody brilliant and it would be good to show him he’s got a future in the ’seleccao’. As for upfront, this team has always really needed two strikers as none of them are good on their own…so classic big man, with a pacy guy playing around him (and Yannick played well for Sporting in the second half of last season).
