Where will YOU watch the Cup?
With the 2006 World Cup fast approaching, many people are makings plans on where they are going to watch their country battle for the golden trophy. I’ve always been envious of those people they show on TV gathered in bars or outdoors to watch, as a nation, their country in the World Cup finals. Now that I am of legal age, I have a lot more choices on where I can go to watch a game..
I’m in a bit of a dillema–do I invite a few friends over and watch the games on my 50 inch plasma in High Def, or do I spend my time at a bar with hundreds of my new-found friends watching Portugal take out the competition (fingers crossed)? Anyone thinks its strange or problematic to be at a bar in the morning??
I want to know what everyone’s doing. I will be in the Boston, Massachusetts area, for anyone who wants to join in the festivities!

Depends on 1) if I can watch it live online via ESPN360 from work by remotely monitoring my PC at home, 2) how well I can avoid updates during the day and watch taped games at night at home, or 3) if it’s a weekend (or the US advances and I get too sick to work) and I go to the local Mexican restaurant/bar. Any of the the 3 are fine by me, I’m not sure there’s a bad way to watch. Good luck with Iran, they’ll be tough.

I’m sure Iran will be tough…BUT the main difference between us now and in 2002 is that I don’t think we’ll be taking any teams lightly anymore. We also have a much better coach in Scolari. As long as the US isn’t playing Portugal, I will be rooting for them as well
Good luck!

I’ll be either at home watching it on the “Tivo” box, at Ginger’s Ale House (a pub with three large projector screens in three separate rooms, mostly frequented by english and irish expats), or at a Mexican restaurant/bar. Depends who’s playing, really.

Portuguese bar/restaurant will be preferred. Toronto is very good for this. But whichever you choose, it is best to be surrounded by as many friends/family as possible, the more the merrier!!!!
For work days, I really recommend planning ahead, take 1/2 day vacation if need be, beg your boss for time off, whatever!!!! I missed ENGvsPOR EURO2004 due to work, now I say no way am I missing any knockout stage games!!!!

Thanks to my PVR I plan to record all the games that I am unable to
watch, for the first few matches I prefer to watch it at home with as few distractions as possile.
What is a good Portuguese bar to watch a game in Mississauga? are there any or will I have to go to Toronto?

I’ll be definitely watching every Portugal game atleast twice. Once at a Portuguese bar when it’s LIVE because you can’t beat the atmosphere and secondly i’ll be watching it late at night at home off my DVD recorder.
If you are in North America and wish to view the schedules for live and repeat games or are looking for soccer friendly bars then you can check this resource out: http://www.livesoccertv.com
btw.. it happens to be my website but nevertheless it should be a good resource for you if you are in North America.
Cheers

john.
go watch the game at the portuguese cultural club. it is amazing plus good food. i bet that they will hold the games there. ive played with my band their on the day of a “classico” and it is amazing. or u can head north to bradford (my stomping grounds) cause there is 3 bars within a minute walk and another like another 20 meters

I will probably watch at a local Irish pub in Berkeley, CA or maybe go across the brige into San Francisco where there are a number of Irish and English pubs that will show all the games.
The only thing is that there are far more Mexicans than Portuguese supporters in this area. I’ll have to be careful with how much celebrating I do. Don’t want to get into trouble when Portugal beat Mexico (hopefully).

BTW, since the games will be shown at about 9:00 AM, I’ll now have a reason to start drinking in the morning.
Ahhhhhh, the joy of the WC!!!!

9AM?..hah…we east coasters have it easy. I’m hanging out with two generations of full blooded Portuguese freaks. Barbecue and then Portugal kicking ass in HD on a gorgeous plasma display. Can’t wait to see our guys give it their all. Figo will be a lion. Ronaldo to dazzle, Pauleta to win the golden boot and Deco to make it all look easy! This is our best chance in a long time. This cup is ours for the taking. Força Portugal!

Somewhere between a dutch bar and Lisbon…

I think I want to watch the games with all of you guys.
I’ll probably be heading out to one of the many Portuguese poolhalls here in Winnipeg and watch the games with 20 to 30 rabid 1st, 2nd & 3rd generation Portuguese. The biggest problem will be getting there early enough to find a seat.

I can imagine the place, Ceasar. Here in The Netherlands, when there’s a POR match, I have to go to Rotterdam, to a portuguese immigrant cafe-restaurant.
The WC games will be available, I guess, everywhere…
Curiously, last saturday I forgot Rotterdam is, after Lisbon, the second biggest Cape Verdian comunity in Europe. So, yeah… It wasn’t exactly empty…

Most of the time, at work. We brougth a TV for the office and we will watch every game while working. We will also get the afternoon off when Brazil is playing. During the weekends and holidays I intend to go to a PUB where I can watch every game joined by foreigners.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to watch the WC in NYC? I’m sure there’s no dearth of places, but what are the BEST places that DON’T charge admission? Thanks much.

There are plenty of NYC bars that are football-friendly listed on http://www.soccerbars.com. There should be no admission charge for most of these. Nevada Smiths is the best known – but also the most popular.

The best spot for viewing all the World Cup games in NYC is at the Time Warner Center. That’s right! Each and EVERY game is playing at the SAMSUNG EXPERIENCE. It’s just above the 59th street subway station at Columbus Circle. No food or booze but where else can you watch all the games on 12 HD screens ranging from 42” to 80” plasmas. It’s free! And you can stay as long as you like. There is seating, and again, even an 80” plasma for viewing all the games. Check out this spot on the 3rd floor of the Time Warner Center. They are also raffling off an official Chelsea Samsung Mobile Jersey every game day.

did the 2 girls in Berkeley, CA ever find a decent bar to watch the WC? I’m also in Berkeley and a few places are into politically correct “fun” – an oxymoron if ever there was …. Three’s Nino’s pizza for the Brazilians (excellent by the way) 0but where are the England and Trinidad fans watching the game?
