The golden generation is already retiring. Therefore, a brand new generation of players is arising in the Portuguese fields.

Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer a promise; he is already a reality. Ricardo Quaresma just led FC Porto to this year’s title. João Moutinho is one of the most experienced player in Sporting before reaching the age of 20. And that’s not all: Manuel Fernandes, Hugo Viana, Bruno Vale, Nani and so many other young players are emerging in Portugal and some of them even have a chance to play in Germany this year.

So, let us know: who is your favorite Portuguese young player? Who do you think will be the main players of the next generation? Who will replace Figo and Rui Costa on the Portuguese field?

C Ronaldo is indeed already “on his way”. Quaresma, although quite young, had a nice start with Sporting, didn’t manage very well at Barcelona and is now improving by the day with FC Porto. I mean, he does have a long future still, but he’s also not a “newcomer” or a freshman.

J Moutinho is clearly my favourite. Not too flashy, he his impecable and highly mature. A team player before anything else. Already the reference in the midfield of a team that until some days ago – Sporting Lisbon – was still in the race for the tittle.

Apart from these, I like Nani very much and I really enjoy M Fernandes’s sobriety. I feel all these guys have everything for a good career.

Although he has a long ways to go yet, forward Ricardo Vaz Te of Bolton may be a player to watch in the next few years. He’s had some considerable playing time as of late and can only get better.

Am I the only one who considers C. Ronaldo overrated as a football player? Sure, his tricks are entertaining, but too often they seem to end up with a loss of possession or a back pass. At least at the club level, the attacks seem to lose momentum whenever C. Ronaldo gets the ball and starts dribbling back and forth. Once his passing game improves, he will be a great player, though.
