Paulo Ferreira takes cue from Simão
Just 3 days after Simão terminated his relationship with the Selecção, Paulo Ferreira takes his cue and does the same. Chelsea’s 31 year old right-back apparently told Queiroz of his decision a couple of weeks ago. I’m not sure if Queiroz tried to convince him otherwise, there are rumors he did, but after his decisions during the last world-cup… did he really? He had made it perfectly clear to the lad he wasn’t good enough for the team. How else can you explain the permanent benching after the game against the Ivory Coast? “Look Paulo I know you are a fine right-back but I’d rather adapt a perfectly inept center-back like Ricardo Costa to your spot and have my folks back home light a couple of candles at Fátima.” I don’t think he said it in so many words but Paulo must have understood the hint as he helplessly watched out the remainder of the world cup from the sidelines. I’m sure he made up his mind back then and waited for the idea to sink in before announcing it to the world.
And so 62 caps later we see him off. It has been a roller-coaster ride. We’ve seen the bad (first game of the Euro 2004 springs to mind) the good and everything in between. I had expressed relief as I witnessed his absence in yesterday’s list for the upcoming qualifiers. As it happens he ruled himself out and I can’t but thank him for it and of-course his contribution to the team over the last 7 years.
Thank you and good luck Paulo.
Yeah, and not only the first Euro 2004 game slip-up, it wasn’t his only one there. I remember him being so insecure in the game with Germany in Euro 2008 too, which even led to him being pushed by Ballack (with a foul though, like we all know), forcing a goal. He was incosistant in many games, even though he had some shining moments and solid performances. But overall, I think he’s just like Simão, who always put average performances, never awful or fantastic ones, which I don’t really like. But I would put Ferreira beneath the former.
Still, we most thank him for some good things he done. Yet I can see he won’t be missed much.

He had his moments I suppose, Ivan’s description sounds about right. Still 62 caps is quite impressive.
Also is this the right place to complain about FPF’s total incompetence? FFS just fire Quieroz and hire Aragones, simple as that but nooo they just had to ban him for 7 months (what good will that do?)
