Portugal Playoff Squad Announced

Paulo Bento has named his squad for the all-important two legged playoffs against Bosnia Herzegovina.

Goal Keepers: Beto, Eduardo, Rui Patricio

Defenders: Bruno Alves, Pepe, Rolando, Sereno, Fabio Coentrao, Joao Pereira, Silvio

Midfielders: Carlos Martins, Joao Moutinho, Miguel Veloso, Raul Meireles, Ruben Amorim, Ruben Micael

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Danny, Hugo Almeida, Helder Postiga, Nani, Nuno Gomes, Quaresma.

And honestly why did we expect anything different? Bento called the usual 23 man roster, and I can’t really blame him. Without any major players missing (I consider Pepe and Coentrao major) Portugal is undefeated in Qualifiers. Pepe and Coentrao will definitely sure up the back line, but still no Bosingwa. Itis painfully clear that we most likely won’t be seeing Jose in a Portugal uniform for the Euro Championships if we survive the playoff. I still can’t believe how a player like Martins, who is over the hill in my opinion for international football, can make the squad when he hasn’t played at all recently because of injury and considering how poorly he has played recently for our team he should in no way be an option. I personally would have called Machado or Andre Santos instead. Bento really needs to rethink the midfield because Martins and Micael have little chance of having a positive effect on this game, leaving Veloso the only option at holding mid and moving Miereles up a bit more.

It’s obvious Bento doesn’t want to mess with his system and the players he think fit it, but it’s hard to ignore talent that could be used consistently like Danny, Bosingwa, Carvalho, and even Wilson Eduardo. Either way, Pepe and Coentrao are back, and Postiga is starting to score more goals, so I still really like our chances of making it to the Euros. More to come in the lead up to the playoffs. FORCA PORTUGAL!!

Saddens me that Martins is there. Also do we really need Postiga, Gomes AND Almeida?

Do we really have other options than those three? Wilson Eduardo, for instance, plays for the U21.

Who knows, maybe I’m missing some names .

*Who knows, maybe I’m missing some names [honest].
It’s just that the false tag “honest” didn’t work as I expected (if only this system had the preview option).

what saddens me has nothing to do with bento, the selection, or anything of that… it’s that even if we win the next 2 games by 20 a goal margin, we still shouldn’t have been in this position to begin with…

im not here to recall bad memories, but for the first time since i started cheering for this team, i am not at all excited to watch a Portugal game… i want this to be done quick and fast.

I too hate how we finished 2nd in the group… after the so-called Gold Generation officially left in 2006, we can’t win a single qualifying group.

This time the things started to look bright, especially after the 5 straight wins with Bento, but a combination of the two first disastrous games, somewhat bad choices for the NT and injuries in the back led to the end result that was the 2-1 defeat in Denmark (not to mention that the 3 goals conceded against Iceland were scandalous by themselves). Another thing that stopped Portugal getting the 1st place was that Denmark only lost 5 points, away against Norway and Portugal, which didn’t really help matters.
But still, I was very dissapointed with the team’s attitude, performance and result last month… Even under freaking Queiroz we played much better in Copenhagen. I really hope the danes play well in the EC, so that to not make us look like fools. I also think they’re better than they were between 2008 and 2010.
One bright side: this time around we were actually in control of the group during some months and improved a bit our record against direct opponents (2W-2L instead of 0W-1L), while for 2008 and 2010 we were chasing the group leader all the time.

With Bosnia we’ll see how Bento can handle a team after a crucial loss. I haven’t lost totally the faith in him, but it’s severely crushed right now. I already have many doubts on his competency, but I’ll hope that the last game’s performance was a one-off and that the team will rise up to the challenge. Now with the main defenders back (don’t want to jinx it, but it would be nice if they don’t get injured until then) Portugal has no excuse to concede many goals.

One final wish: José Mourinho in the NT, hopefully not after 10 years, but at least between 3 and 10 years from now on.

Bosingwa just confirmed himself that he won’t be called while Bento’s managing the team.

Another player gone due to discontent….Why did chosing Bento all of sudden seem like a bad choice?

you can talk about the line-ups all you want the truth is you still have more than enough talent to beat us but you won’t it will come down to one thing testicular fortitude balls in one word. Than again any team that gave up 3 goals to ICeland and 4 to Cyprus does not scare me your defense is like Swiss chesse and will be exploited I don’t care who you have back there. Don’t come to Bosnia its going to be a ruff environment you guys could not handle it.

We also didn’t have balls two years ago to defeat you in Zenica, despite all that environment and our national anthem being booed… just saying.

Is someone mad because their team is getting another one way ticket out of the playoffs?

Bosnia is one of the worst teams I have ever seen in my life. They play like absolute shit. Your fans also act like cavemen. That being said, no matter how many Portugal players are injured, we will beat you guys clean, and when that happens I wanna see what your fans are going to be doing. God, Im getting sick and tired of seeing fucked up Bosnians commenting in every Portugal blog I visit. Fuck off.
