A nice day for an Orange juice.

June 25th, 2006 | By: Luis Paulo | 52 Comments »

October, 16th, 1991. This was the last and only time that we were defeated by Holland. We played against them 7 times after that, including the last Eurocup semi-final. However, all this past won’t matters if we don’t defeat them today. This is the most important match for Portugal that most of us are born to watch.

When I first start blogging here, I wrote about our possible opponent at the round of 16. Back there I said:

“When it comes to the Netherlands, Portugal seems to do just fine. It has been 15 years (or 7 games) since their last defeat. Actually, that was the only time they ever lost. Their last game was in Euro04 semi-finals and Portugal made its way through. Ever since, the Netherlands has improved their game, but so did Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo and Deco are more experienced and I believe that Portugal would win again.”

And I stand for the statement.

Holland is a fast and young team, with a lot of talent. They play in a very similar way to Portugal, with two wingers opening spaces and making plays for a lethal striker, Nistelrooy.

However, they have one problem that could be explored. The team is not balanced and creates many more plays on the left than on the right side of the field. That’s because Robben plays there and the right winger Van Persie is left-footed.

Therefore, today is the day for Miguel stay still at the defense, helping the defenders to fill in that space.

Defensively they have two problems. Due to the fact that their wingers play very offensively, Holland doesn’t normally fill the space at the wings between the defenders and the wingers, especially on their right side because on the left, Gio Van Bronckhorst keeps the defense more secure. But with space at the wings, Portugal can make plays or try long shots. Let’s remember them that Maniche is on the field.

FORÇA PORTUGAL!

No Deco, Ronaldo for next match.

Figo will be suspended for head butt.

I like your chances against england without your 3 best players.

Another quarterfinal exit for portugal.

Thanks for coming out.

Thank you Cartman! It’s nice to see someone who can appreciate a win and not throw excuses at us. Yes, it was a rough game but I don’t think the ref favored ANY side, he was just crazy all around. The Dutch didn’t score. Portugal did.

Hup Hup Portugal!

Nicolaricola, are you nostradamus? Noone said Ronaldo’s injury was bad enough to leave him out for the next game…. We won against Mexico with 5 of our star players on the bench, remember that?

Meus amigos portugueses,

Nicolaricola:

Unfortunately for you, that head butt was not a cause for a send off, therefore he cannot be suspended because of that. He would have had to be sent off for that issue to be a part of the equation.

By the way, Simao Sabrosa played a great game instead of Cristiano Ronaldo, both today and against Mexico, so even if he can’t play, Portugal has a deep enough team to defeat a very underwhelming and laughable English team.

My only concern is what happens afterwards… with so many people with yellow card, the possibility of losing several of them in the semi finals (which I think the portugese will get there) are very very high.

Portugal showed the world today that if its a fight you want…we are ready for it…

C.Ronaldo’s courage to continue playing after that dirty blow to me shows me the heart of a true champion….

You want to talk about something, talk about that….

or talk about the beautiful goal Maniche scored against Holland.

FORCA PORTUGAL-we go down but we can always come up…in your face!

Countries like portugal that have a lower than 70% literacy rate should not even be allowed to play in the world cup.
