Gerrard: Ronaldo, Carvalho ‘a disgrace’

August 14th, 2006 | By: Luis | 21 Comments »

Gerrard and RonaldoHere we go again folks. We thought this saga was slowly being put to bed, but it appears that there’s more money to be made from ‘wink gate’. Following in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard will release a new autobiography where he lashes out at Ronaldo and Portugal teammates, calling their actions in the World Cup disgraceful.

“Sadly a dark side stains Cristiano Ronaldo’s game,” writes Gerrard in his autobiography. His part in Wayne Rooney’s dismissal was a disgrace. Ronaldo was at the front. But the blame does not just rest with him. Five or six Portuguese players were at it.”

“Players like Carvalho are damaging football, not Wayne Rooney,” Gerrard insisted. “It’s coached into them that when an incident like that happens, they go to work on the ref.”

Well, I guess when you need a little media attention for your book release there’s nothing better then piling on the Portugal haters bandwagon. Steven Gerrard is normally a pretty levelheaded guy, but it’s obvious he’s a bit desperate to get some attention. With Rooney and Ronaldo getting all the press time and John Terry’s recent appointment as the new England skipper, poor old Gerrard must be feeling a bit left out. He did say a few things that I fully agree with, however. Commenting on England’s performance in the World Cup, Gerrard expressed some regrets over the team’s mental attitude.

“We were not as good as we thought we were. England were guilty of over-confidence. Me and the other players placed too much pressure on ourselves by constantly claiming we could win the World Cup. Stupid. We talked ourselves up too much. Never again. In future tournaments we must learn to be humble.”

At least you got that part right Steve and hey, Portugal fans are glad to offer you a chance to improve your book sales. As long as England continues to put on mediocre performances, we’ll be happy to be your scapegoat.

Força Portugal!

As much as I hate to admit it, Gerrard is right. Can’t really argue with him after watching not only that game but all of the games Portugal played.

Let’s face it,Portugal had a very good team which overachieved by making it to the semi’s.

It took them 40 years to learn to be humble…

As far as I´m concerned, he can say whatever he wants…

I can only imagine what will they say about the next team that kicks them out…

One advice to Gerrad: Writing these words won´t take away your “Ricardo Fobia”… ;-)

Manuel - something tells me you’re not a Portugal fan. Final of the Euro, top four finish in the world cup, and more to follow at Euro2008. That should count for something, no?

So Gerrard is right when you agree with him but wrong when you don’t agree with him. Pretty convenient double standards.

it’s sad they’re still harping on about it in england. being humble? let’s see what they start to say when they top the group by beating the likes of mighty Estonia, Macedonia and Andorra in the qualifiers.

I can understand why they didn’t choose Garrard to be England team’s Captain now. Just for these words, he should suffer from more frustrations from now on. Good luck to Garrard, hope you will be more fortune than your previous.

Gerrard should be back off.
I dont think Calvalho really hurts Football.
These Gerrard comments or what Rooney did are far more disgrace than Ronald or Calvalho.
I think England players’ atitude was the biggest reason of their “earlier than expected” exit.
They should be laughed by world.

Poor poor Gerrard, he should use that energy on the field and perhaps he would score more goals.

Pathetic that you guys are still standing up for that team. It should tell you something that the negativity is stil surrounding that disgraceful tournament for Portugal.

Thanks for the link Pedro P. They have an ‘anti-mergulho’ culture, but unfortunately not an ‘anti-violência’ tradition. :-)

Right on Pedro. Everyone only see’s the other side.
I think after a couple of good results like yesterdays M.U. game for Ronaldo and they will stop with the antics…

Unfortunatly he’s just got to suck it up for now.

All we need to do is show him that we’ve always supported him and always will. I’m still wearing my Ronaldo Portugal jersey as often as possible..

Hi guys!

The “antics” are over… :-) The WC is also over… And the war (this one at least) is also over… C Ronaldo is happily playing together with Rooney, firing up the Man Utd fans… ;-)

http://www.ojogo.pt/22-182/artigo573652.htm

If Portugal qualifies for the next WC’s, C Ronaldo still has at least 2 of them in his legs… :-) And I can tell you something else: If Scolari stays for the next WC, Ricardo will be on our goal, to scare the living daylights out of all the english… ;-)

its just so funny ENGLISH seem to single out portugal as divers and cheats yet EVERY team does it. the worlds top teams ALL do it. FRANCE, ITALY, NETHERLANDS etc.. obviously england only seems to go on about it bcoz they in the past 10yrs they ALWAYS seem to get knocked out of major tournaments BY PORTUGAL.. easy explanation for a country to hate another (in terms of football)

and to the dumbass that said they overachieved. do u realize how stupid u sound? its not like they dived n got penalties to win games. THEY SCORED THEIR GOALS LEGIT AND STOPPED THE OPPOSITION FROM SCORING, THUS WINNING GAMES. isnt that how u play football? theyre ranked 8th in the world why is it hard to see why they went so far?

England just can’t accept that they lost to the better team. I’m 100% English but am a diehard Portugal supporter and I just think its sick how they can’t handle their rubbishness.
