Quim: “I want to play”
The Benfica’s goalkeeper Quim is on the headline on every Portuguese sport newspapers. He was recently sacked from the team by the Dutch coach Ronald Koeman and now he is not even being capped as the second goalie.
With the World Cup just ahead, people are starting to wonder if Quim is going to be capped by Scolari. However, Fernando Brassard, goalie’s coach for the Portuguese national team doesn’t think about it as a problem: “This is Scolari’s business. My job is to coach the goalkeepers but I can say that Quim was capped before when he was playing and when he was not, so that wouldn’t be a problem. But the coach should be the one who gives the last word.”
Many other people are showing their support to Quim. His former coach Manuel Cajuda believes that Luiz Felipe Scolari wouldn’t abandon the one who helped him trough tough times. “He (Scolari) decided that Ricardo and Quim would be the goalkeepers for the World cup a long time ago due to their technical and tactical skills. He said that when they weren’t in their best moment. Therefore I believe they would be between the 3 goalies that will be playing in Germany,”
Quim has a contract for 3 more years at Benfica. Therefore he hopes that with hard work and patience he will get an opportunity to be among the 11 starters again.

Scolari, at a time the whole country was against Ricardo due to his poor performances with Sporting, gave him his full suport, didn’t listen to the croud and at that time, Ricardo did very well for the NT, while doing very bad for Sporting – this tells us something about making your players feel confident.
What about Quim not playing…?
He’s NOT played more than he actually did, this year… I believe Scolari will take him as our #2 goalie anyway. I also believe that if he doesn’t, it’s because he knows better or another reason.
ps – Brassard was the goalie from the Golden Generation…

To me, it’s very risky to take a goalie who is not playing. However, once he is only the 2nd goalie, might be ok.

The question was metaphorical…
Sure I don’t trust a goalie that hasn’t been playing. But again (it’s not blind fate) Scolari is the one who knows about this… Truth is we also don’t have anybody else…

I hope he goes just for the comic factor his name will allow for the British tabloids.

Dudes, I went to the site… That’s why I asked Wendall how to properly pronounce it in english…
Anywway, after knowing this, just imagine the cover of any newspaper: “QUIM WANTS TO PLAY”…

It’s pronounced Qwim. And yes, the headlines are too many to contemplate…
“Quim not welcome in dressing room”
“Scolari says no to Quim”
“Quim envelops the ball in a great save”

Wendall… You’ve made me laugh now…
Can’t wait to see if Quim will take a beard or will go to Germany shaved…
Anyway, “Valente” means brave. I guess everybody knows what “Petit” means. “Pauleta” is also a nickname and I imagine it meaning something like a stick. “Figo” is his real surname and it means fig, a fruit. “Boa Morte” literally means “Good Death”. I ran out of names from which something funny can be made. Feel free to comment and/or let your imagination go loose…

Pauleta is a nickname for Pedro, what seems weird for me. Paulo means little, humble.
