The way to the victory – Portugal x Mexico

June 21st, 2006 | By: Luis Paulo | 6 Comments »

Portugal faces today its most difficult opponent on Group D looking for its third victory in a roll. This game will be the big test for the Portuguese team to see if they are in condition to defeat whoever they face at the round of 16.

While Portugal comes from 2 victories, Mexico tied against the weak Angola and now needs a good result to guaranty its way to the next round by itself.

In my opinion the Mexican team, even after 2 entire month of training is very fragile. We could see that on their matches against both Angola and Iran. Offensively they are very limited, even though they have good strikers, but once again they face the lack of creativity on their midfield.

However, defensively they are very strong. However, with Deco, Pauleta, Costinha, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nuno Valente out of the game (they would be suspended if booked) players like Nuno Gomes and Simão Sabrosa will have their chance to claime their place on the team.

It is definitely a good game to gain confidence, consistence and fitness. A victory against a strong opponent is the best way to reach the next round.

Portugal (probable): Ricardo; Miguel, Ricardo Carvalho, Fernando Meira e Paulo Ferreira, Petit e Maniche; Figo, Tiago e Simão; Nuno Gomes.

Mexico (probable): Sanchez; Marquez, Osorio e Salcido; Mendez, Torrado, Perez, Pardo e Pineda; Bravo e Franco.

Angola is not a weak team, if they are; you should of beat them 4-0 or more right.. You only beat them 1-0. either you are an OK team (if angola is a weak team) or Angola isa better team.

How about Iran, are they a weak team also.

Mexico will win this match. without their star forward. i know, your stars will not be playing, but we will still win.

have fun loosing to argentina

Louie stop proving time after time that you’re some 40 yr old large hairy women named Helga who has a transformer collection and you live in your parent’s basement. If I remember correctly, Portugal did beat Angola and had control over the entire match, what did Mexico achieve against them? Oh right, a lackluster performance which resulted in a draw. I think getting the benefit of being seeded and ranked 4th in the world is getting to both you and the Mexican squad. Ease up, you don’t want to wet yourself too early.

No doubt…what’s with all the hostility? If you’re not having fun with this world cup then you’re missing the point. Even if Portugal gets knocked out of the tournament, I’m not gonna go around with such hostile mood bashing other peoples comments. We’re just having fun people. This is supposed to be a celebration of cultures and football…not a pissing match!

Beautifully said Kelvin.

Mexico are a good team but over-rated. I expect Portugal to control the match even with their subs. Mexico will advance but will need Iran to help.

Louie, have fun losing to Argentina now. Told you that overrated Mexico would lose to a ‘B’ Portugal side.
