Why the match against Iran is the most important one

June 13th, 2006 | By: Luis Paulo | 11 Comments »

I can hope for big emotions. This will be the most important match on the 1st stage. This game is the real deal, the first big test. We will see if Portugal went to the World Cup to win or just to play.

Iran has no option but winning and they have a team good enough to win. At the same time, if Portugal reaches its second victory, it will be already qualified to the 2nd round.

This is also the chance for the team to show a new attitude. With Deco on the field, Portugal has the potential to play a great game and achieve an even greater victory.

Tactically, Portugal is playing very well. With Figo and Ronald by the wings and Deco as a playmaker, we will have the advantage on the game. The Iranians remains with a bad positioning on their defenses. However, Carvalho & Cia will have its biggest test.

FORÇA PORTUGAL!!!

Yes, Indeed Iran will be the true test of the group phase. Iran will be fighting for their lives and will demand a tremendous effort from Portugal. We all want to see more fluid display from Portugal with their midfield maestro back in action, but again, what matters most is the result. If Portugal wins, they can clinch their place in the second round and then focus on their last opponent in the group phase. Iran may be the most critical game, but the game with Mexico will be for bragging rights and a legitimate right to be considered a true “contender”.

For now, we focus on the task at hand. Just like Angola, Iran will not be an easy victory. Força Portugal!

I hope both teams play well…

Whoever wins at the end doesnt matter as long as they played fair.

Iran played very well against Mexico during the first half. They seemed to shut the Mexican midfielders during the first few minutes and were attacking right away. However, I believe that our midfielders (with Ronaldo, Figo, Deco, Maniche, and Petit) have more depth than Mexico’s and can overcome the Iranian midfielders as well. With Deco back, we really have a lot of attacking options- Figo can drift more towards the flanks allowing Deco to take hold of center. The only move of Scolari’s which I disagree with is COSTHINA!! Every time he’s on the field, it really scares me that he’ll lose the ball. I don’t like the way Costhina plays because I feel that he lacks speed, and at times he’s really nonexistent during the game. Hopefully Scolari will make the right decisions.

Força Portugal!

If Iran can play like they did in the first-half against Mexico, it’ll be one hell of a game – assuming Iran’s coaching staff doesn’t opt for the “ok, everyone now stand in front of the net” approach like they did in the second-half.

You should not feel worry about Iran at all. Unfortunately we have a 37 years old big key player named Ali Daei which plays for our opponents (or at best only walks in the ground and watch the game!) and our coach is in love with him and he’ll never go out and sit on the bench! You will play against 10 Iranians not 11. You’ll win. There is no chances for us.

I wish to watch portugal plays agains brazil in the final!

Cheers

in my opinion Iran is not eaven close to Portugal in quality.

The start of portugal was good (The first 20 minutes)
But with that game thay wont’t go far. they have to give more effort to score goals.

Portugal can score plenty of goals. Anyone that didn’t watch this team for the last two years and is basing their assessment of the team’s capabilities on the first match simply doesn’t have enough information.
