FPF to decide Couceiro’s fate later this week
According to reports from Portuguese radio outfit Antenna 1, the board of directors of the Portuguese Football Federation has scheduled a meeting, later this week, that will likely decide the fate of Portugal’s Under 21 and Under 20 coach, José Couceiro.
The same report suggests that Couceiro’s future with the FPF is hanging by a string, but a final decision will not be made until Couceiro has an opportunity make his case before the directors.
As Greg over at portugal.theoffside.com has stated, this better not be political theater. The entire world witnessed his incompetence and no amount of excuses and rationalization will change the results. I say sack him without further delay!
UPDATE: FPF delays final decision regarding Couceiro’s tenure until their next meeting, July 27.

I just want to see the outcome… Anyway, his speach is classical and I wouldn’t be surprised if anybody else, except Mourinho, Scolari, Manuel Jose, etc, would have it… Fortunatelly, they still have testicules…
That’s what I mean with mentality and the “old portuguese spirit”. If you have a looser spirit just stay home, giving oppinions for free. Like us…
But hey, we’re not coaches. We just like to talk… What we call in PT the “treinador de bancada” (there’s a bit of this in all portuguese) – Luis, please find a decent translation for this, dude…
If we don’t get paid why should he…?
But anyway, regardless of the result, I must admit I’ve never liked his style… He just looks like a poor Mourinho clone, 20 years older (OK 5-7)…
Look at the pic… He’s saying “Mourinho is this big!!! I wanna be just like him, doctor”…

Off topic, but quite worthwhile: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/skills/6270994.stm

Great read Pedro, thanks.

Pedro – Thanks for the article.
“treinador de bancada” would be what we call an “armchair coach” or “armchair quarterback” to use an American football metaphor.

Yes, good article Pedro.
You got the translation spot on Luis. We are good armchair coaches, arn’t we.
And speaking of which, looks like the U19’s are picking up right where the U21 & U20 left off…

Can any of you make sense of the new FIFA rankings? I understand why the S. American teams made big moves since they played all summer long, but why did NL go up 2 and Croatia up 4?

United States

Luis, your guess is a good as mine. Apparently some teams don’t even have to play to move up and others can lose and move up (USA)??

It’s all to keep us with something to talk about…

I know I am of topic for this article but some unfortunate NT news…It seems that Hugo Viana will be out for the rest of qualifying with a broken metatarsal…

Yeah I read about that yesterday Daria. Those pesky metatarsals are a real downer. At least we have plenty of depth in midfield.

United States

Yes, not good for Viana. But I think Moutinho is better as a backup for Deco anyway.
So like Luis said we do have depth in midfield.

It’s fate…
I guess Moutinho also deserves it more than H Viana…

Hey, Simao is going to Atl Madrid… For 20 million… I wanted him to go to a team where he could actually win something…

Finally, someone besides Porto sells a player for some real money.

Oh please do not show too much commiseration with Viana. ![]()
Some Spanish bulletin had a tiny interview with him talking only about the goals Valencia probably won’t reach now, it sounded as if the squad depended on him… Well, a lot of nonsense, if you ask me, he didn’t even mention that this could possibly cause problems for the NT. I know players who do that all the time…
@ Luis: I just wish to warn you not to underestimate the slowly but surely growing neo-Nazi community in Germany. Kindly watch NPD party’s results in Eastern Germany and understand what today’s young people are looking for – not only in Germany.

Sorry, guys, I just want to prove I’m not off my rocker…

Carlos, we live in days where Identity dilution and total standardization are promoted. Also because promoting difference appears to be seen as dangerous or subsversive. One cannot say portuguese are different than spainards, or french, etc, we HAVE to be europeans, period.
Which is of course uterly stupid. Because people ARE different and there’s nothing wrong with it. WQat is wrong is to have “correct” and “incorrect” versions. Well, it doesn’t do much for Freedom, the pillar of Democracy. But it’s one of mankinds oldest temptation – to possess an absolute truth.
Naturally you get the opposite manifestation as a result. In Europe it’s particularly obvious. You don’t need to be a History freak like me (or like the dutch goose who doesn’t even know how his country got his empire, of which every dutch is very proud, although having a speach like they aren’t and firmly believe that everybody else fid it like they did, in the same historical context – here’s braiwashing for you).
Nor to study politics nor sociology.
You just need open eyes and commun sense.
Yeah, f**k Viana…
Long Live Moutinho…

Carlos – never thought you were off your rocker. And believe me, I’m quite aware of how poor our collective memory can be. Extremist groups always flourish during troubled times. You should read some of the rhetoric around the issue of ‘illegal’ immigration in the US right now. Much of it is overt racism that would even make a neo-nazi blush.

and quietly Couceiro is done. I would’ve wanted a more formal statement from the FPF reiterating the values and manner in which they expect the NT to be coached.
