Forget “WAG Wednesday…” How about “Where’s my MF news Wednesday?”

July 9th, 2008 | By: Greg | 7 Comments »

I’ve had enough of ogling these other guys’ WAGs, so I posted my future second wife, Portuguese model Sara Santos. She conveniently has the same last name as me, so I won’t be forced to have her take my surname when I make her my property. For some NSFW fun, Google her name and the word “Playboy” with the “SafeSearch” off. I think you know what that will yield.

I’m well aware that you guys have come to expect consistently brilliant stuff from me. As a matter of fact, I happen to fart brilliance. However, it’s hard work trying to squeeze anything from the national team out during “off periods.” I’m following all the youth programs. I’m keeping a close eye on the managerial situation. I even followed Ronaldo into the men’s room the other day to try and get something to blog about.

Alas, I’ve presently got what Ronaldo went into the bathroom to take: shit (and yes, incidentally, his B.M. does smell like ice cream). With a shortage of WAGs to post (I think we’re saturated enough with Nereida Gallardo and Deco’s flavors of the month) I’m at a loss for content. I’m more or less posting this to make sure you guys don’t go too far and so you have something nice to look at for a bit. As soon as something material hits the waves, you can expect to hear about it here.

Yeah, Greg, fear not… We’ll be here… ;-)

Listen, if you’re looking for topics, why not make a “special” about our “heroes”? Nobody really knows them…

I mean, we don’t have such a huge player tradition like other countries. Mainly because this was the pre-Bosman era and our players never got out of PT, or the NT never really went far (we know that to be in the map you don’t have to play good, but to win). Consequently they always stayed in teams with a lesser profile. OK, Benfica has a great CV (in the 60’s it was the only team to break Real Madrid’s hegemony, also thanks to THE KING), but the glory days belong in the past. For the Selecção it all really started with the golden generation…

So, well, everybody knows Eusébio, Figo or Rui Costa. But what about Chalana? Futre? You guessed, they were wingers and some of the best ever… His play in 84 was just superb… The (micro) man would dribble without even touching the ball… :-)

Soo many others that were quite good but because the NT never went anywhere in the 80’s (except in 1984) and it only started showing in the mid 90’s, never managed to be famous. Except for us… Other names: Bento (the last survivor of the “portuguese moustache” goalie), Damas (another brilliant goalie), Vítor Baía (the man with one of the biggest CV in sports ever), Veloso (Miguel’s daddy and the guy all dutch know, for failing a penalty against PSV, for Benfica), Gomes (one of our last strikers and the guy who Nu-nogoals chose to steal the name from). João Pinto (the old from FCP), all the guys from the 66 team, etc…

THAT, or historical momments… Not necessarily just the good ones… The PT vs Brasil match in 66 (we got the label for injuring Pélé but the truth is that he was already injured, didn’t really play anything and just starred to put the creeps in our team, but we won 3-1). The glorious vicotry over North Corean, after being down 3-0. The win against ENG in 2000 (ENG was then the favourite but it turned out PT and FRA had the best teams in 2000 – FRA went to the Final to play ITA). How we managed to fail qualification for USA94, with only a draw needed in the last match. Or the match that kicked us out of FRA98 (the 97 qualifier against GER, we were dominating – 1-0 up and kicking their ass – and then the ref red cards Rui Costa for alledgedly “walking” when subsituted). That ref, Marc Bata, never referreed a match in PT again… If the player wasn’t Rui Costa, even being a fake red card, we could take it. It just happens as Rui Costa has always been one of the more honest player EVER. And this was said by Colina himself…

Anyway, plenty of ideas dude… 8)

Well said Pedro.

Also I would like to add Paul Sousa (who played for a while in Italy I believe) he was another standout out I believe?

Paulo Sousa was, to me, our really great “trinco”. If CR is a Ferrari, he was a Rolls-Royce… Excelent in recovering but also in starting the build-up. Also in long passes. Too many injuries, though.

He was European Champion with Juventus and also with Borussia Dortmund, in the 90’s. Now he’s coaching kids for the FPF, but I don’t know which level.

He was very, very good.

Pedro, I had toyed with the idea of a “What should I write” type of blogging, but you saved me some keyboard time and space with your suggestions, thanks, I think you’ll be seeing some of what you recommend in the near future. (Chicks as well)
