Portugal

50 to choose from. Shall we?

Selecção Portugal 2010It has all been about lists in the last couple of months. The list of players who played the most during the qualifiers. The list of players who would have a chance to make the final list of players that actually go to SA, and of-course the wretched list of injured players.
Well Carlos Queiroz finally released today what list he’s looking at to pick the final 23 world champions… excuse me for being so bold.

I’m surprised to see Maniche in there. Surprised, but glad. Perhaps Manuel Fernandes should be on it but all in all I find it a solid enough list of 50 to come up with a top-notch 23 man squad.

Here you have it:

Atlético Madrid: Simão Sabrosa, Tiago
Benfica: Carlos Martins, César Peixoto, Fábio Coentrão, Nuno Gomes, Quim, Ruben Amorim
Chelsea: Deco, Hilário, Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho
Inter: Ricardo Quaresma
Cologne: Maniche, Petit
FC Porto: Beto, Bruno Alves, Miguel Lopes, Raul Meireles, Rolando
FC Zenit: Danny, Fernando Meira
Iraklis FC: Daniel Fernandes
Kayserispor: Makukula
Lille: Ricardo Costa
Málaga: Duda
Manchester United: Nani
PAOK FC: Edinho, Vieirinha
RC Deportivo: Zé Castro
Real Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe
Valladolid: Pelé, Sereno
Saragoça: Eliseu
Sp. Braga: Eduardo, Hugo Viana
Sporting: Daniel Carriço, João Moutinho, João Pereira, Liedson, Miguel Veloso, Pedro Mendes, Rui Patrício, Tonel, Yannick
Toulouse: Paulo Machado
Valencia CF: Miguel
V. Guimarães: Nuno Assis
Werder Bremen: Hugo Almeida

Now then what would my recipe for success be?

Goal-keepers: Eduardo, Quim, Beto
Defense: Ricardo Carvalho, Pepe, Bruno Alves, Paulo Ferreira, Fábio Coentrão, Miguel, Ruben Amorim
Midfield: Maniche, Deco, Raul Meireles, Pedro Mendes, Tiago, Miguel Veloso, Carlos Martins
Offense: Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Simão, Liedson, Makukula, Danny

Some of these choices warrant explanation.

Beto has done some amazing appearances for Porto lately and to be honest he might even be better then Eduardo. Might. The jury still isn’t out on this thought. It would however not surprise me if CQ went with Eduardo + Patrício + Hilário for the goal-keeping trio.

Fábio Coentrão is the obvious choice for our future left-back. If he isn’t first choice for this event he MUST be prepared to take on this role for the next Euro 2012.

Carlos Martins and Ruben Amorim both surprised me a lot during the last couple of months. Ruben for his versatility and Martins for his vision and power kick.

Veloso is currently my first choice for left-back – very closely followed by Coentrão – winning by a narrow margin on maturity. I left out Duda because I simply don’t see any first grade quality to warrant him a spot on the team (let alone in the starting eleven).

Maniche is my “fetiche” player. I’d always include him in the line-up. Unfortunately I don’t think CQ agrees and we will most likely not see him get his passport stamped.

I hesitated between Hugo Almeida and Makukula. I honestly think you could combine them and still not have the killer instinct striker we need but looking at their track record this season… Makukula takes the spot. If we are down and all the meat needs to go on the grinder he looks like a chap that could actually come in handy.

The same hesitation occurred when choosing between Danny and Quaresma. If only Quaresma had some more mileage on his legs this season…

Well what’s left?

The starting eleven:

Eduardo
Paulo Ferreira – Ricardo Carvalho – Pepe – Veloso
Pedro Mendes
Deco – Meireles
Nani – Liedson – Ronaldo

Would this have us sing:

We are the champions
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions – of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No? What would then?

i just had a bet with my friend on who’s gonna be the WC top scorer….i say ronaldo, he says messi (for whatever reason)
@Andre Veiga
ronaldo is of course world class, he’s out of this world and deserves to hold the trophy, but i have seen ronaldo shine when he runs around the field, not being committed to any particular position, a minute he’s left, the other he goes right, i remember his last game against valencia where he used this technique and ended up having all the defenders of valencia booked for trying to stop him :)
so instead of putting him as a pure striker, let him run all over the place, he could easily attract defenders away from leidson or nani or whoever to deliver the final blow :)

Good lineup kiko.

Like most of you, I’ve watched Portugal and Ronaldo rise almost in tandem. I hate to say it, but our hopes ride with Ronaldo. Yes we have talent at every level, and yes only teams win championships, but if Ronaldo has a good tournament we can go to the final. If he doesn’t, probably quarters at most.

This is his time. He’s 25 and peaking physically. He will only get better, but his potential has never and will never be greater than right now! He’ll be 29 next WC.

Portugal needs to bring up the talent and market their players into the best leagues in the world – not Egypt or whatever…

you guys are funny…did you even watch pepe play dm in qualifiers? he was a MONSTER…simao belongs on the bench…

Eduardo
Miguel Carvalho Alves Duda

Pepe
Veloso

Danny
Nani Ronaldo

Liedson

Makakula should be called with almeida
Fernando Meira should be called for his height experience and versatility(do you all forget the troubles we have with set pieces)
And the writer of this article needs to chill with the benfica bias Amorim and Martins are not National Team caliber players they wern’t even consistent starters for benfica and benfica wasnt half the team when martins played instead of aimar…the goal is to win the WC not to fit as many benfica players as possible.

Almost certainly either Zé Castro or Ricardo Costa will be sent home if Pepe is fit. And everybody is praying he is fit. Zé Castro maybe. Pepe, be well, please. Wonder if we could kidnap and brainwash David Luiz, like an April Fool´s joke they fell for in Brazil – if Brazil does not call him up, we sure would appreciate him as he deserves. The list is.

Guarda-redes: Eduardo (Sp, Braga), Beto (FC Porto) e Daniel Fernandes (Iraklis);

Defesas: Duda (Málaga), Miguel (Valência), Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea), Bruno Alves (FC Porto), Rolando (FC Porto), Pepe (Real Madrid), José Castro (Deportivo), Ricardo Costa (Lille) e Fábio Coentrão (Benfica);

Médios: Pedro Mendes (Sporting), Tiago (At. Madrid), Deco (Chelsea), Raul Meireles (FC Porto) e Miguel Veloso (Sporting);

Avançados: Simão (At. Madrid), Danny (Zenit), Liedson (Sporting), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Nani (Manchester United) e Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen).

Looks sensible enough, though of course everybody will find somebody to get offended about.

I have to admit I’m surprised Makukula didn’t get called up. He’s had a good season.

Joao Moutinho and Quaresma both did not make the cut. This sucks, we’re going to get out early.

:(

I would rather see a brazillian like Pepe play for Portugal than a “portuguese” like Daniel Fernandes who does not even speak Portuguese. And to prefer David Luiz to Zé Castro you don´t have to be a Benfica fan, just have a brain. Don´t worry, no chance, just mentioning it because it was a huge april´s fool joke by that famous Benfica supporting paper Record ;) that brazillians fell for.

Uh what the hell are you talking about NO MORE BRASILIANS PERIOD…people like you piss me off at least D.Fernandes is portuguese so what if he was born in canada his blood is portuguese NOT BRASILIAN. Your thought process makes us look pathetic like we dont have talent so we have to get it from the “almighty brasil”…if you love brasilians so much just root for them and take off the red jersey because YOU are a disgrace……quaresma hasnt played for like 6 months and played 5 games total this year why should he be there…danny is better than moutinho and im a sportingista.

Well luckily we don’t pick the side based on blood or ethnicity. We do, however, select based on nationality. If you’re a citizen, you can be selected. Simple as that. The Portuguese of all people should understand that people immigrate. Don’t you think?

I like the squad. Formation will not change (no time) and it is good for us that we must be on our game from the beginning or else we will be knocked out. We are terribly complacent and the group will force us to be great from the start.

In Portugal being Portuguese ou “Estrangeiro” is often related to how a person speaks Portuguese and with which accent, how a person integrates with society. It is players who can NOT speak Portuguese wearing the shirt which bugs me.

After all it is not 24, but secretly it is a list of 30, there are 6 more reserves to be sent to FIFA – Rui Patrício, João Moutinho, Rúben Amorim, Manuel Fernandes, Eliseu, Makukula. If only we could take the 30.

i’m not 1% portuguese and i don’t know much about portuguese heritage and what it means for a brazilian-born players to play for portugal. all i really care about is seeing the portuguese team (regardless of who plays for them) become champions this summer.

have u guys seen the brazilian squad, and the french, italian, and argentinian as well? i can easily say that the potuguese one is better than all of them!!
i’m really having a good feeling now about how the world cup is going to turn out for portugal :)

ahmad, and how about the spanish one? Really, we shouldn’t underestimate ANY team, neither Ivory Coast, nor even North Korea, and of course, regardless of the line-up, we shouldn’t ever underestimate Brasil!
I surely hope we do a great World Cup, but this time it’s just more difficult than ever, maybe only in 1966 we had tougher opponents than now. But of course, Força Portugal A!

@Ivan
the spanish squad is scary :S they’re the strongest i’ve seen so far …. i’m not saying that the other selections make portugal’s road any easier, after all it’s only our 5th appearance :(
but i really believe that ronaldo will be like eusebio of 1966, a player out of this planet, also not saying that the team depends on one person, but you know i mean.
….. 28 more days !!! forca potugal

We have some advantages. If Portugal is to win the WC in the next 10 years, now is the time. Ronaldo is 25 and at peak form. With the number of Portuguese immigrants in SA, support will be close to home pitch conditions. Nani is better than ever and Simao has that winning spirit from AM’s recent Europa Cup victory. If Pepe is healthy and effective and the defense holds together we could have an excellent cup. The next WC is in Brazil, so you can forget winning that one!
