Estonia 0 – 0 Portugal: Match Review

Congratulations Estonia you deserved more. Well played.

When I accepted the challenge to start writing for this blog I was under the firm believe an endless amount of praise towards our selecção would break free on these lines. We would obliterate the Albanian and dazzle the Estonian. Far from it. We barely survived the weak Albanian squad and got thought a lesson by the excellent Estonian. The hat is off. Praise to them.

Carlos Queiroz’s statements after the match:
- Our goal was achieved. The players that were here gave their maximum, maybe they were a bit nervous. I wanted to give them the opportunity to have more experience.
- Except for the results at home, we have met the plan I established for this season.

A couple of good things can still be said about this match:
1 – Beto : best player on the pitch. Solid goal-keeping.
2 – …
Ok then nothing else springs to mind.

We weren’t able to string 2 passes together. The transition from defense to offense was simply nonexistent. Starting with only one true midfielder (Tiago) was a surefire way to get overrun in the middle and forget any chance of delivering playable balls to our forwards. Boa Morte failed miserably as a winger during the first half of the game against Albania and proved inapt at the role Queiroz had for him this game: center midfield feeding the offense.

On a scale from 0 to 10:

Beto – 8 : some very nice goal-keeping
Remaining players – 4 : either due to being nervous or because Queiroz had them playing “unnatural” positions no one really showed they merit being first choice for our Selecção.

Queiroz – 1 : words escape me

I confess I was a big critic of Scolari and uttered a big sigh of relief when Queiroz got appointed the job, but now an uneasy feeling is starting to make its way into the back of my mind. Haven’t just yet clouded it but they do look more menacing game after game.

September is a long way out and hopefully we will be back strong and I can finally spread some love here!

Yeahh..
I say fire Queiroz while there is still time. No point keeping a man who doesn’t know where players actually play.

I’m looking at the FIFA rankings & somehow we’re 11. I reckon by the time the next set of ranking come out we’ll be like 25 and over, thanks to Queiroz.

All these comments about Portugal not playing good and that they have a bad coach is just not acceptable. What these players have to do(if they want to win obviously) is accept each team as an easy team even though that team is tough. It is the spirit in within the team that will make them succeed. They just have to play the game like they play for their clubs with their head up and play to win. Losing should not put any team or any player inferior, losing is just part of the game and should be accepted by fans, players, coaches or anyone that understands the sports. Once the portuguese team accepts that losing is part of the game then they will open their minds to recognize their mistakes and fixed them while there is still time. Remembering that, winning is scoring and scoring is winning will boost the spirit of the team towards winning the group stage.
Good luck boys(PORTUGAL), and good work. From worse can only get better…..

Noel: so you want Portugal to start underestimating other teams? I think that’s a very bad idea.

Here’s the only reasonable solution:

Replacing Queiroz.

Hey guys, me and my estonian friend were watching the game from the TV and as the game progressed, we became increasingly amazed how Portugal couldn’t score. And to be quite honest, in the second half it seemed Estonia even had better chances to score. It even feels like it could’ve been 1:0 to us. What’s going on with the Portugal’s national team, I don’t understand.

I imagine that moral in Portugal is not the highest right now?

@OhYeah, Portugal’s moral hasn’t been high since the 2-3 loss against Denmark at home (3 goals of Denmark in in the last 10 minutes). A string of poor draws, and lack of goals followed by the ultimate sucker punch 6-2 loss against Brazil.

Get rid of Quieroz and replace him with, a preferably, non-Portuguese coach. Klinsmann doesn’t have a job (yet) and his Germany in 2006 was excellent.

Although I fear it’s way too late by now.

Hello form Estonia! I agree about Beto, he really did a good job and ruined some of our best opportunities to score. There were some “divings” from Portugese side I did`nt like so much but thats the nature of the game. Most Estonains consider this 0:0 game more important and better than our easy 3:0 win against Equatorial Guinea last week. I can say that I also find Portugese game not so rude as with Guinea (they got 5 yellows and one red). It is a pleasure to play equal with one of the top teams of Europe even though your football is having hard times right now.

Nice friendly game. Hope to score or see some really nice goals next time. Thank you for a visit and good luck in qualifying for World Cup!

Best Regards!

@Noel:The truth is always acceptable. Underestimating opponents isn’t.

Besides Beto I was also impressed with Estonian number 11, Voskoboinikov, 26 year old player from FC Torpedo Moscow, very goal-minded player that didn’t give up on any ball heading his way. Interesting.

After a second “fast forward” viewing of the game I’m going to award José Castro with a 6. His defending wasn’t all that bad but he needs to work on not just destroying the opponents offensive play but deliver playable balls to the midfield. Gonçalo Brandão gets downgraded to a 3, he accumulated on disastrous defending throughout the game.

Just curious, was this game broadcasted live on TV in Portugal and if so, do you know how much locals/fans followed/noticed it at all? I mean its not a big game, just a friendly match, so was there something diffrent to feel in the pubs etc… or just a usual lazy midweek evening?
Just want to imagine the feeling in the air. I`ve had luck to visit some big cities during important games and I like the special vibe in the air during these events. How about those “small” games where is no some Giant vs Goliath battle?

I didn’t get to see this game, but it sounds like Estonia played well and Portugal played poorly given the expectations for both teams. Thanks to the Estonia team for giving the Portuguese a good fight in a friendly and reminding them that they have a lot of work to do if they want to have any hope of making the World Cup 2010.

From what I’ve read, it sounds like the only “good” things to come out of this game for Portugal might be:

- solid performance by Beto; does this mean we can count on him to as our #1 keeper? I have not been impressed with Eduardo.

- another poor performance from Boa Morte … can we hope that Queiroz finally gets the message that BM does not belong on the Selecao?

Otherwise, Portugal continue with their inability to score goals. It will be a long wait until September …

To Miguel

Voskoboinikov is a good player, he works hard and is good in the air because hes quite tall but he doesn’t score that many goals. And as a Striker, that’s what you should be the best at. If he starts scoring a bit more goals, hes a very good striker. And btw, he doesn’t play in Russia anymore, he plays in Sweden’s second league team Syrianska FC.

You had your chance in 04″ You guys are the champ of hockey with skates or whatever u call that gay sport. You guys can go back to your excuses about the coaches fault or the other team payed to win. The reason you guys lost in 04 is because you have no balls, balls win titles, not home field advantage. OK the coach sucks but my high school team can beat Estonia, look down the balls are either there or not.

So much repressed hurt. Did your father abuse you while your mother watched? When you start calling anything you look at “gay”. You know you are one. I’m sure your high school team can beat the Girls Under-12 Estonia team. It’s just that nobody gives a flying fuck about them.

hey i live in the US but am full blooded portuguese and msudzi it is one hell of a thing to talk about portugal or any team for that fact when your country blew it against brazil and has been against every team in the “awesome” lol world cup qualifiers they have. or maybe your a band wagon fan and like a team like brazil or spain but either way when portugal finally gets in a qualifier zone that has tough competition like el salvador and trinidad and tobago and we lose then you can talk until then keep your fingers crossed and maybe the US can win the prestigious Gold Cup again.. woo hoo. good luck beating third world teams.

Honestly, it just seems like they don’t want to play or that they think they can’t win. Needless to say we have no poocher in the box since Pauleta left! This is what I would like to see Portugal form up as:

————–Beto
Bosingwa—Pepe–Alves—Carvalho
——Moutinho—Meireles
Ronaldo——Danny——-Simao
————Liedson

its a 4-2-3-1 which is the formation we used in the Euro 2004 tournament. Deco or Danny can take up that playmaker role in the middle.
