Friendly Recap: Brazil SIX - Portugal 2

November 20th, 2008 | By: Greg | 28 Comments »

What the hell do you expect me to write about this? An embarrassment to end all embarrassments.

Speaking of ending embarrassments, when is the axe going to fall on Queiroz? I don’t want to hear any excuses about players missing due to injury or about the fact that the match doesn’t “count” for anything. This is just fucking HORRIFIC.

I’m not going to do my usual break down of the match with player ratings, etc. This team didn’t perform anywhere near deserving even one more keystroke to be wasted on their shitburger that they displayed on the pitch yesterday.

I guess we’re back to sucking again… Great…

I agree Greg. We’re turning into an average team again, we can kiss being a European (and World) superpower goodbye! It was fun while it lasted. I use to bitch at why Portugal did not win the Euro finals in 2004 or why couldn’t they get past the semifinals in 2006, now I’m afraid they wont be even present in 2010. This fucking sucks. I hate Queiroz, always have and always will. Worst.fucking.idea.ever to give him the coaching position after his awesome run more than a decade ago!! You’d think they would learn from past mistakes.

man i’m worried we are heading back into the pasts’ obivilion. No 2010 qualication, not being a main team anymore.

why isn’t manuel fernandes, veluso, antunes, a solid keeper and a striker picked? we were awful yesterday

Who should be his successor then?

I think if Jesus Christ himself managed us, then MAYBE we’d win something….

Zico, plain and simple. He was my top choice when Scolari announed he was leaving and he still is today. I was never thrilled with Quieroz, but appreciated the fact that he had and Ronaldo had a good relationship and that the management at ManU were so disapoointed that he was leaving. I was hoping he had left his past failures behind him and had learned from SAF. Obviously he hasn’t.

It’s sad to think we are reverting back to the Portugal of old. Underachievers with all the talent in the world but with no class on the pitch. I think that’s why I’ve always liked some of the less flashy guys (Nuno Golos, Simao, Meira, Costinha) bc granted they might not be as talented as Quaresma or Ronaldo or Nani, at least they play with pride and class when they put on the Portuguese jersey.

Let’s just hope they make a run and get back on the right track. I’ll survive if they don’t qualify for 2010 (never thought i’d say that), but I’d like them to start playing better football and get a string of good games together at least.

once again playing true portuguese soccer. priorities in following order

1. always look good
2. always win the fight
3. concern yourself more about your teamates job and not your own
4. win the game

portuguese soccer is suffering from a super stardom they have never faced before…while professional in their approach their heart is diluted by the rock stardom they believe they posses…these guys are all more concerned about cars, girls, haircuts, modeling contracts and pre/after game outfits.

this is a problem not easily fixed.

I agree with Chistian, but the sad thing is…
These less flashy guys (Meira,Maniche, Costinha, Nuno Gomes, Simao & so on…) are all pretty much either in their 30s or late 20s, which is a very scary thought, because when some of these players leave/retire…Portugal will be a mess, even worse than right now.

Lets face it, Portugal overachieved in WC 06. They got the hopes of their fans too high. Scolari has proven to do great things with mediocore teams. IT will be a triumph just to qualify for major tourneys from here on .

Team of the tournament? Advancing from a weak group. WInning the round of 16 with a dirty shameful effort and then beating England with a man up in penalties? Oh yeah then a laskluster effort in the semi’s followed by a beating from Germany in the 3rd place. Team of the tourney? Hardly! Figo played shamefully and ruined his rep.

Baxter, you need glasses. If you read Toodles original message it said “Figo made the team of the tournament” meaning the top players of WC ‘06. He didn’t say Portugal was the team of the tournament. Obviously that was Italy b/c they won the damn trophy.

By the way, here’s the Team of the tournament from WC ‘06 for viewing pleasure:
Goalkeepers
Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Jens Lehmann (Germany), Ricardo (Portugal)

Defenders
Roberto Ayala (Argentina), John Terry (England), Lilian Thuram (France), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Gianluca Zambrotta (Italy), Ricardo Carvalho (Portugal)

Midfielders
Ze Roberto (Brazil), Patrick Vieira (France), Zinedine Zidane (France), Michael Ballack (Germany), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Gennaro Gattuso (Italy), Francesco Totti (Italy), Luis Figo (Portugal), Maniche (Portugal)

Forwards
Hernan Crespo (Argentina), Thierry Henry (France), Miroslav Klose (Germany), Luca Toni (Italy)

Get some bifocals, and then come back to posting.
