Latest Group of Convoked Ones Released Today

Today, boss Carlos Queiroz released his list of twenty three Chops and Adopted Chops who he’s going to be picking from to open the first two matches of World Cup 2010 Qualifying. The following dudes will be facing off against Malta Goya on September 6th and Denmark on September 10th:

Keepers: Quim (Benfica), Eduardo (Braga), Daniel Fernandes (Bochum, German Bundesliga)

Defenders: Bosingwa (Chelsea), Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea), Pepe (Real Madrid), Bruno Alves (Porto), Fernando Meira (Galatasaray, Turkish Süper Lig), Antunes (Roma, on loan to Lecce both of the Italian Serie A), and Miguel (Valencia, Spanish Liga)

Midfielders: Deco (Chelsea), Pedro Mendes(Rangers, Scottish Premier League), Raul Meireles (Porto), Carlos Martins (Benfica), João Moutinho (Sporting) and Maniche (Atletico Madrid, Spanish Liga)

Forwards: Simão (Atletico Madrid), Danny (Zenit St. Petersburg of the Russian Premier League), Nani (Manchester United), Nuno Gomes (Benfica) Huge-Go Almeida (Werder Bremen, German Bundesliga), and Yannick (Sporting)

You read that right, bitches: Maniche is back. I’m glad that Queiroz didn’t jettison him into the far reaches of International Space. His past performances in a Portugal shirt have earned him the right to have another shot. Ronaldo is still nursing a bum ankle so he’s out and Dick Quaresma is a notable absence on the wing. Manuel Fernandes, who was included for the recent 5-0 friendly with the Faroe Islands, is also left out. Miguel Veloso hasn’t had much burn this offseason and will probably get another run out with the U21 squad.

Pedro Mendes, who has been called up previously, joins Yannick who will be making his first senior team International appearance with these two matches. Yannick’s recent form for Sporting makes this a well deserved distinction. I’ll be around tomorrow with some ideas about how to throw this team together and go after the first two qualifiers. For now, who’s your Starting XI?

If I was the coach I would pick…
Quim,
Bosingwa, Pepe, Carvalho, Antunes,
Carlos Martins, Deco, Raul Meireles, Nani,
Yannick, Almeida
But alas, I don’t think they’ll ever play the 4-4-2 they need

As my F’ing super awoke me from my slumber for saying I had the tv on on my apartment too loud, (I was watching the replay of the Liverpool match in a continuous loop and fell asleep) I can write at 4:30 in the morning.
My eleven:
Quim
Same back line as above but Antunes (damn) won’t get the run so it will be Miguel
Moutinho Maniche Deco Meireles
Simao Nani
Almeida though Djalo is fully deserving but will probably be subbed in at 70 minutes.

My prediction:
Quim (Thank God)
Boswinga-Pepe-Carvalho-Miguel (wouldn’t mind Antunes)
Moutinho-Maniche
Nani-Deco-Simao
Nuno Gomes (Would love to see Djalo)

Porto or Charlie needs to tell us what the hell is going on with Ricky. If it’s simply that they don’t want him to get hurt right now and ruin his chance of going to Inter before the transfer period closes, fine, tell us!

Glad to see Maniche back. As you said, Greg, he deserves another chance. I think a bunch of the new guys (Danny, Martins, Mendes, Djalo, etc.) will get a chance to either start or sub in against Malta. That should be an easy win so I think it would be good to throw some of those guys in for the experience.

I know I fell out of love with Simao during Euro, but that sick header against Faroe Islands and the fact that he’s been playing more for Atletico has put him back in my good graces. Speaking of the Faroe Islands, still waiting for that recap Greg! J/K.

Last, but not least, Guimaraes got SCREWED! I have absolutely no attachment to the club, but good God I couldn’t help but flip out when I saw that goal called back.

I just wonder who will start as the striker. I’m kind of sure Queiroz will use one striker at a time and he’ll be bound to substitute him out around 60-70 mins.

You just wait. Now that Maniche no longer plays for Inter he will be simply spectacular. Always happens. I love Inter, but we do have difficulty getting the best out of good players so dont judge him based on last season’s perfomance.

Miguel Veloso needs to be included….a anchor midfielder will be needed to allow the famous Portuguese attackers to do what they do. Plus, his free-kciks are priceless…
Like to see Makukula…
