Portugal – Hungary : Match Preview

October, 10, 2009
Estadio da Luz, Lisbon, Portugal
20:45 Lisbon, London; 15:45 New York
We are at the gates. Hell or heaven lies beyond.
Once again my confidence levels are renewed and I look upon these 24 lads Carlos Queiroz called up, to carry out everybody’s wishes:
Goal-keepers:
Beto (Porto)
Eduardo (Braga)
Rui Patrício (Sporting CP)
Defense:
Bosingwa (Chelsea FC)
Bruno Alves (FC Porto)
Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea FC)
César Peixoto (SL Benfica)
Pepe (Real Madrid CF)
Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea FC)
Rolando (FC Porto)
Midfield:
Deco (Chelsea FC)
Duda (Malaga CF)
João Moutinho (Sporting CP)
Nuno Assis (Vitória SC)
Miguel Veloso (Sporting CP)
Pedro Mendes (Rangers)
Raúl Meireles (FC Porto)
Tiago (Juventus FC)
Offense:
Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid CF)
Liedson (Sporting CP)
Nani (Manchester Utd)
Nuno Gomes (SL Benfica)
Simão Sabrosa (Atlético Madrid)
Edinho (Malaga CF)
Ronaldo, Bosingwa, Duda and Tiago are injured but apparently recoverable for Saturday’s match (Tiago being the bigger doubt). These injuries also account for the last minute calls of Pedro Mendes and Edinho, both not in Queiroz’s original list. Add to the injured Pepe’s 1 game ban on yellow cards and things might start to look a bit grim.
As usual Queiroz has some surprises on the list such as Paulo Ferreira, Cesar Peixoto, Nuno Assis and Pedro Mendes. I am glad to see Pedro Mendes finally in the squad. He definitely deserves it. A bit skeptical about Paulo Ferreira, Cesar Peixoto and Nuno Assis. Paulo hasn’t played a single minute for Chelsea in the EPL. Did Queiroz watch Chelsea’s reserves game against Wolverhampton Wanderers (Paulo captained the team to a narrow 1-0 win)? Nuno stands out in a sub-average Guimaraes team but I can’t see him even making the bench for the next two games. Perhaps Queiroz just wants to see him kick the ball around during the next few days…
Braga is leading the Portuguese league with an impressive run, 7 victories in 7 games. 2 Players have so far contributed a lot this: Hugo Viana and João Pereira. I would not be as skeptical if CQ had called them up instead.
When Cesar Peixoto was at Porto I really had him picked for the left-back spot of the Selecção. He was playing very well and then suddenly he got injured and was dismissed by Co Adriaanse. He regained his form at Braga after a disappointing attempt at relaunching his career in Spain. Did some above average games but never got the call. Now after playing 3 below average games at Benfica he made it into the nation’s top 24 players ?! I wonder if the “Benfica Stars Fund” has anything to do with it, and if his name will show up there in the near future. Hope not.
Also Quim for Beto. Beto is a fine keeper (perhaps better then Quim) but Quim is first choice at Benfica and sees action every weekend…
In the end none of them really matter for the line-up of the upcoming games. Can’t see Queiroz sub Meireles/Tiago for Mendes/Assis, Bosingwa/Duda for Ferreira/Peixoto or Eduardo for Beto.
Press comments:
Queiroz: “We know our obligations. Two games at home and we will win them.”
Eduardo: “We are confident we will win. We badly need these victories. We’ll have maximum concentration and believe they will happen.”
Simão: “We don’t know what to expect from Hungary. We’ll have to perform well and win.”
Koeman: “We can still qualify fo the 2010 world-cup. It is not an impossible mission, we’ll keep hope alive until the last game.”
Sweden plays Denmark in Copenhagen and the result will be known before our game starts. Let us hope Denmark shows up for the game and hold them at least to a draw. If Sweden wins… they won’t.
If it was up to me:
Eduardo
Bosingwa — Carvalho — Alves — Duda(?)
Meireles
Tiago — Deco
Ronaldo — Liedson — Nani
FORÇA PORTUGAL!!!!

Nice post! Why not Paulo Ferreira in the starting lineup?

I just hope Denmark try hard enough to actually beat Sweden! This is now or never for us, because I’d hate to wait another 4 years. And if we make the playoffs we don’t have to worry about facing the likes of France, Russia or Germany because it’s being seeded
FORÇA PORTUGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miguel isn’t in the squad because he had or has a personal matter to attend to. I believe his daughter nearly died, or something.
Now in his place did Paulo Ferreira really need to go into the squad? Surely there’s someone else out there better than him.

@Monica08
Because I have doubts as to how fit he really is. Of course I’m not in a position to judge his fitness and if Queiroz plays him I will assume he did deserve the spot after-all. I must however confess I’m not a big fan of seeing benched players getting the call to join our nation’s finest.
@Seth
Because we are only 17th in FIFA’s ranking we might not be top 4 of the eight best runner-ups. Thus the prospect of playing France, Russia or Germany increases!
@Toodles
Miguel’s baby daughter fell of a 9th floor balcony and luckily landed on a flower bed on the 3rd floor balcony! She’s well and at home with a broken arm. According to Miguel he had the worst 3 days of his life. I can imagine as I have myself a baby girl crawling through the house.
Newspapers today are reporting Veloso as the likely candidate to replace Pepe. Mixed feelings about this. The lad can be enormous on the pitch, but he can also miss 2 out of 3 passes…

I think Veloso should play at left back since I was looking to see Miguel play there. Duda has not impressed me at all, aside from a near free-kick and a good cross…woohoo. Nani should definately start over Simao since Simao has been poop on a stick. I would also ATLEAST sub on Moutinho for Tiago at some point.

Yeah Paulinho, I agree with your bit on Simão. If Queiroz starts Simão we are down one man on the pitch. I watched his performance against Porto when Atletico faced them for the CL and he was utter crap, not to mention all his performances so far in these qualifiers.
I can’t figure out Moutinho’s place in the team. He always gets the call to the NT but rarely does any time on the pitch. This season I haven’t seen him do a solid performance, but that goes for the entire Sporting team. It looks like he’s in Meireles’s shadow. I just can’t figure out how Meireles got past Maniche.
On another note it seems Ronaldo and Bosingwa are fully fit. Good news. Tiago is still an uncertainty. Perhaps there is hope for a Moutinho start.

yes, yes, yes. 79mins Simao!!!!!

3-0!
And more good news: Croatia might not make the play offs, which potentially places Portugal as a top 4 seeded team.

I would end up calling the best young players we have quieroz is blind at seeing some young hopefuls underneath our noses as for strikers varela, vaz te,Almeida,Yannick (FOR ME THE BEST CHOICE)nd makukula also danny r all the choices we have at disposeal for srtikers should call these players up for experince liedson is good for now. with others like fabio coentrao coming out and young defenders like Rolando and manuel da costa and full backs nelson and jose goncalves for the left back problem duda aint cutting it defensively. and center midfield hopefuls fernandes,
veloso, moutinho,Vitor pele, paulo machado. and nani quaresma ronaldo on the wings for years time and also OTHER WINGERS ELISEU NANI POSSIBLE YANNICK AS A WINGER BECAUSE OF HIS VERY FAST FEET nd bosingwa fillin rather left or right back because we can get miguel, nelson on the right and try goncalves left and goalkeepers rui patricio and ricardo batista coming up we can have one of the top 5 teams in the world in the near future if they develop
batista (sporting)
Nelson (real BETIS) PEPE (real madrid) bruno alves (PORTO) BOSINGWA (chelsea) MIGUEL (valencia)ROLANDO (PORTO) carvalho (CHELSEA) MEIRA (ZENIT) we have cover for center backs even rb and lb
