Portugal – Malta : Match preview

October, 14, 2009
Estadio D.Afonso Henriques, Guimarães, Portugal
19:45 Lisbon, London; 14:45 New York
Malta is next up on our menu. I’m confident we will not f things up. I now you are all eager to remind me Sweden had a tough time escaping the island with a win in their bags. But if you look at FIFA’s match review you will notice Sweden had lots of chances and Malta basically “parked the bus”.
It’s a given fact all Malta can hope to achieve is a goalless draw. They will park a double-decker bus in their goal area and we will simply have to tear it apart piece by piece until there is nothing left but 7 goals in the back of the net. Not one less.
If anyone can these 23 can:
Goal-keepers:
Beto (Porto)
Eduardo (Braga)
Rui Patrício (Sporting CP)
Defense:
Bosingwa (Chelsea FC)
Bruno Alves (FC Porto)
Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea FC)
César Peixoto (SL Benfica)
Pepe (Real Madrid CF)
Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea FC)
Rolando (FC Porto)
Midfield:
Deco (Chelsea FC)
Duda (Malaga CF)
João Moutinho (Sporting CP)
Nuno Assis (Vitória SC)
Miguel Veloso (Sporting CP)
Pedro Mendes (Rangers)
Raúl Meireles (FC Porto)
Tiago (Juventus FC)
Offense:
Liedson (Sporting CP)
Nani (Manchester Utd)
Nuno Gomes (SL Benfica)
Simão Sabrosa (Atlético Madrid)
Edinho (Malaga CF)
Ronaldo as we all know is out injured and Tiago only started training today after his injury.
For this game the good news is Pepe is usable, the odd question being: “And where shall we use him?”
Pedro Mendes deserves to keep his spot in the starting eleven so why not:
Eduardo
Bosingwa — Carvalho — Alves — Pepe
Mendes
Meireles — Deco
Simão — Liedson — Nani
We might even try:
Eduardo
Bosingwa — Carvalho — Alves — Nani
Mendes
Meireles — Deco — Simão
Liedson — Gomes
Somehow I don’t think Queiroz is going to drop Duda now. We’ll just have to wait and see.
FORÇA PORTUGAL!!!!

I commented this on the player ratings post from the last Hungary game but I think it makes for an interesting discussion in this thread as well:
Left-backs this campaign:
1) Malta 0 – 4 Portugal
ANTUNES – how come we have been forgetting this promising young player?!
He has a fantastic left foot! I remember him scoring some awesome goals.
2) Portugal 2 – 3 Denmark
PAULO FERREIRA
3) Sweden 0 – 0 Portugal
PAULO FERREIRA
4) Portugal 0 – 0 Albania
PAULO FERREIRA
At this point Paulo Ferreira got injured and DUDA took over for the rest of the campaign.
I now realize Queiroz called up Paulo Ferreira the minute he got back on his feet after his injury. I expressed some doubts as to why CQ called him up on the Portugal-Hungary preview post but now it’s perfectly clear: he wants him as LB as soon as possible. Calling him up boosts his confidence, and gives Queiroz the opportunity to evaluate the possibility. Didn’t use him for the first game against Hungary but I’m willing to bet we will see him against Malta!

Looks like you guys are backing into another tournament. In the Euro’s Portugal did not have one single win vs the top 3 teams being Finland, Poland , Serbia. Now another bunch of ties and two wins to feeable Hungray. Go Malta only real teams should qualify for the world cup. You should thank God u were in two weak groups

@msudzi
Unfortunately, our recent campaigns haven’t gone as well as we’d have liked but we’re still very proud of our team. It’s a bit of torture, but it’s typical for Portugal to not do so well in qualifying stages but to then “turn on” the talent during the actual tournament where it matters most. An affliction we share with teams like France and Italy who often do the same. That being said, I’m pretty sure runners up in Euro ‘04, 4th in WC ‘06 and quarter finals in Euro ‘08 (knocked out by eventual finalists Germany), qualifies us as a “REAL” team.
Thanks for your unbiased opinion though.

Portugay and Gaynaldo aren’t going to the World Cup!!!

to the last comment; how long did it take to think of that?

roll on the play offs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Portugal will qualify, you bunch of soccer pessimists! Remember that we showed up in glorious fashion in the Euro, the World Cup (where we were robbed by a 1/4 true French nat’l team. We just have to tighen our defense more & we will be alright. Bring the French on !
