Queiroz calls Boa Morte and Jose Castro to the Selecção

May 30th, 2009 | By: Miguel | 4 Comments »

After a lengthy absence of news in the Portugal Blog I thought “What the heck. I can do this!” and so my first post is actually very timely as Queiroz has just recently called up the selecção for the next 2 matches against Albania (6th of June, Tirane – WC qualifier) and Estonia (10th of June, Tallin – Friendly).

The 31 year old winger from Westham, Luis Boa Morte, is back and although I’ve always liked the guy I’m not sure if there is room for another winger in the team. With CR, Nani and Simão he must feel like a fourth option…

Debuting in the selecção is Deportivo da Corunha’s José Castro (26y). 7 Years ago I thought he was a promising center back but as I’ve seen his career evolve my expectations have somewhat diminished and although he’s good, he’s not THAT good. Of course I’m just a couch-coach.

Any way, without further ado here are the 24 supreme athletes determined to produce world-class soccer, hell-bent on erasing the past painful performances and dazzle us with their never ending repertoire of technical and tactical skills:

Goal-keepers:
Beto (Leixões SC)
Daniel Fernandes (VFL Bochum 1848)
Eduardo (SC Braga)
Moreira (SL Benfica)

Defense:
Bosingwa (Chelsea FC)
Bruno Alves (FC Porto)
Gonçalo Brandão (AC Siena)
José Castro (RC Deportivo)
Miguel (Valencia CF)
Pepe (Real Madrid)
Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea FC)
Rolando (FC Porto)

Midfield:
Deco (Chelsea FC)
Duda (Málaga CF)
Eliseu (Málaga CF)
João Moutinho (Sporting CP)
Raúl Meireles (FC Porto)
Tiago (Juventus FC)

Offense:
Boa Morte (West Ham Utd FC)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester Utd)
Edinho (AEK)
Hugo Almeida (SV Werder Bremen)
Nani (Manchester Utd)
Simão Sabrosa (Atlético Madrid)

Well that wraps up my first post, I’m sure I’ll get way better then this as all your comments bring down the hammer on my writing abilities, or lack there of.

We’re currently sitting in 3rd place. For Portugal to qualify, we MUST WIN all the 5 remaining games (including away games at Denmark, Hungary and Albania). Our chances look slim…especially since Sweden has one less game to play and could possibly top us.

ugh
