Queiroz ready to call Liedson

Carlos Queiroz will call Liedson da Silva Moniz as soon as his Portuguese passport is issued. The 31 year old Brazil born striker from Sporting Lisbon follows Deco and Pepe’s footsteps into the selecção. At this age the only reasonable justification for this move is Portugal’s serious lack of able strikers. A long lasting problem.
I’m sure Queiroz had hoped not to resort to this but the eminent danger of us not qualifying for the WC has left him with little options. I think Liedson is a fine player but at 31 this is a very short term solution for a big problem. Furthermore how can the Portuguese Federation now support its criticism on the clubs that favor “imports” over “homegrown”. No offense on some of the fine “imports” that give the Portuguese league more quality, but we are talking of a minority compared to the truck load of imported players!

I’m for it. We don’t have anybody else ready for the striker spot, and Liedson has played in Portugal for long enough that I can view him as a representative of the country. I believe he would be the solution to our lack of finishing on the attacking end.
I know some people will argue that it should be only people born in Portugal, but take a second and look at many of the other top teams in the world and you’ll find people that were not born in the country they represented. Our greatest player of all time, Eusebio, was not even born in Portugal. Yes, he was born in a Portguese colony that was still under Portuguese control at the time, but nonetheless he still wasn’t born in Portugal. It’s not like someone like Lucho saying “oh, Argentina never gave me a call-up, and i’ve been in portugal for so long that i’ll just play for Portugal”. At Liedson comes from a former Portuguese colony.
Also, I’m sure the people of Italy aren’t that upset that Giuseppe Rossi is playing for them instead of the US. If someone has a desire to represent a country and is given permission by the government and governing soccer association, so be it. Give him that red, green, and gold #31 jersey and see if he can work some magic for us.

Well, maybe he’s attempting to get the Portuguese strikers players to play better, by having the forgein guy in the team, hopefully that’ll motivate the Portuguese players….nahhh. This is the Portugal we’re talking about.
On a different note, anyone see the goal.com blog thingy in the Portugal team of the decade?
Definitely worth a look, people.

portugal surely will not qualify for the worldcup because they no longer have quality players apart from cristiano who does nothing with the national team . struggling against small nations !!! how do they will perform against england holland brazil..!! it is better that portugal don’t qualify because it would be a shame !!!you don’t have strikers like van nisterlooy van persie huntelaar kuyt…..compared to holland for example.. deco is too old. etc etc etc i watched their last game against albania and watched holland against norway and the conclusion that all experts know is that portugal is now an awful team with an awful manager.
should be thinking of building a team for euro 2012 or better for wc2014.

@Christian
I’m not a big fan of using foreign nationals in the team but as longs as their quality is indisputable and their interest seems genuine I can understand the decision to call them up and although I won’t openly support it, I will not criticize beyond the low tone bitching about the lack of support Portuguese clubs give our youth.
@fares
WTF?
You have some balls coming in here talking bullshit like that. Still sour Portugal sent you packing two times in a row are you (or three if your a brit)?
No quality players? Don’t even go that way. When we call our boys up they haul ass from Europe’s top teams.
Deco is too old? Yes but did you mention 33 year old van nisterlooy (nice name)? THAT is old!
Speaking of strikers and since you mentioned them: Ruud van “Old Boy” Nistelrooy, Robin van “It Hurts Everywhere” Persie and Jan “Benchwarmer” Huntelaar are all thriving success stories at the moment no doubt… lol
Sure we are having a tough time at the moment but I doubt we would loose against Holland or England for that matter. Brazil, France, Spain, Italy and probably Germany would do us in at our current form. But it can only get better from here.

Rossi’s parents are both born in Italy and he was born with dual citizenship and spent more years growing up in Italy.
one could argue about Camoranesi, though i beleive his mother is Ialian by birth.
it is an interesting arguement, but i think any player needs to have more of a connexion to a country played for than just living in that country for a certain amount of time.
